The profit margins on things like this are ridiculous.

Agreed.

I wasn't going to say anything but this makes Games Workshop's models look reasonably priced.

Portsmouth has several model/collectable shops that sells rare items of stuff like Star Trek (classic) for about this much. Sure, these might be limited edition... but what ever. I'd never spend this much on one of these models.

Don't get smart with me. I'm well aware of that. The point of my statement was the huge price on these is obviously not going into the hand labor required to make them. The profit margins on things like this are ridiculous.

lol, we just covered that today in class. my teacher says that the advertising is what makes up most of the money spent on a product.

Depends what kind of product, and what kind of advertising.

As far as i'm aware these havn't been mentioned anywhere other than blogs and word of mouth.

I think anyone who's actually going to buy one of these probably won't have to be advertised to.

...and I'm sorry about your disappointing front desk visit, Terr.

I wasn't interviewing for a job or anything, I just dropped off some fan-made hardware and never got a response. :/

Don't they typically turn you away if you try that? I thought I heard that somewhere.

You know they've got those 3D printers you can print layer by layer a 3D item...would make an extremely accurate cast/mold type process, instead of taking a chance with someone's disproportionate sculpt...but what do I know anyway about figurines? (not very much)

It's not like you can say, "well it's x units in my modelling program and therefore it should be x units in real life." If I'm not mistaken, 3D printers will often require some further scaling and adjustment until they produce the proper product.

I don't want to run the thread too far off topic, but the two items in question were USB drives with accompanying dead-tree letters.

I wasn't trying to get a tour or anything.

Those things are f'ing expensive. And they break. EASILY.

But they do import 3D models from Maya and that-other-modeling-program, and I know the models in TF2 work in those programs, so it's definitely a possibility.

Thanks, I'm glad we got to see some progress pictures for these figurines. Just yesterday I visited the site to see if there was any more information, and there wasn't. I started to wonder if these were still happening.

Overheard at the tf2 character statuette meeting:

"What should we charge for these figures?"
..
"I dunno, $100? Who's our target audience?"
...
"Teenagers?"
...
<laughing> "You kidding? They're only a fraction of our playerbase"
...
"It's mostly folks in their 20's or 30's with loads of disposable income, Frank - you crunched the numbers on the production costs, what are your thoughts?"
...
"<ahem> If we factor in paying the sculptor for the master sculpt. Then the molding process ... the cost of plastics and parts production from the negative molds ... and assembly ... "
...
"We can save some money getting the chinese to make it."
...
"Well yeah - they make everything, that's a given these days"
...
"... this is quite a limited run, so it's going to cost us more than $100.00 per unit in production overhead"
...
"ok, so $150 per unit?"
...
"We want to make more of these right? Like one for each class?"
...
"Of course!"
...
"Well, we should think about this first one helping to pay for the production of the second one shouldn't we?"
...
"yeah"
...
"ok, so $200?"
...
"then we gotta pay for the shipping on all these figures"
...
"$250?"
...
"sounds good."

Isn't the material quite expensive? And they're all hand painted. For example scout is going to be a fair bit cheaper than the Heavy.

I seem to remember from my DT lessons way back that moulds cost a hell of a lot of money, one injection mould could cost many many thousands.

I wish I could remember what colour I asked for. All I can remember is that I didn't got for the matte grey version I was offered. Why would anyone want a matte grey heavy? o_O

oh that's true. And that's a very good idea. though they were only offered to staff, so I guess they didn't really intend anyone to do that.

Very localised fame. (also I already have achieved fame in the TF2 community, if only it came with riches and girls as well)
