Oh damn! I suspected as much, but only so far as somewhat inspiration, not blueprint.
This is pretty cool.
Whoa. I wonder if the Black Mesa team knew this and adapted accordingly. Probably not, I bet.
It's also in Alien Swarm, and Halo. (#3, I think?)
Also, not to doubt you, but could we get a publish date on that manga? Because it could have been the manga copying Half-Life, and everyone else also copying Half-Life.
Well... the giant elevator isn't the thing in question, really. Those have been in numerous things because they actually exist. The thing here is how it is basically foot-for-foot mimicry of the room layout.
Also, it's theoretically possible that they just used the same reference material. Who knows, really, and I'm not sure it matters.
Yeah but isn't akira like really really ancient? So in all likeliness, the original half-life team was probably inspired by it if anything. The Akira manga probably had tons of great reference in it.
As Booj already said, these things exist in real life; and i'd also like to point out these things tend to be prefabricated. As in they tend to be built to the same specs (even if the design varies a bit) and distributed by a single manufacturer. It could also be that the reference material used by akira was also used by Valve.
We know Valve certainly has no shortage of reference material after some of the pictures released by them for TF2 and HL2.
The similarity is uncanny though. Is that actually a frame from Akira?
