You don't need to make the match up perfectly, because sew does it for you. but what you do need to make sure is that your brushes line up perfectly otherwise sew wont work.

thanks, my displacements are looking much better. I am practicing displacements in a test map. I am still having trouble aligning textures, with the face and world checkboxes annoying me. any tips on that?

Select one face's texture, hold alt and rightclick on the displacements directly next to it. select the newly aligned face and repeat for the next one.

in exactly the same way, you just have it horizontally flat rather than vertically.
That image is a bad example as the author clearly has no idea how to make displacements. you should make sure there are no obvious seams in your ground by making all the edges line up neatly.

Displacements may sew with one another so long as their vertices meet - this means the two either being brushes of identical dimensions with identical displacement powers, or identical dimensions with different displacement powers (the vertices on one brush that don't have a corresponding one on the other can still sew to the edge of the other brush). Your biggest worry about vertices not being able to sew occurs when you start resizing other brushes...

Don't forget to align the textures on these displacements, as well. Sometimes when connecting these together and painting the alpha, one forgets that displacement textures still have to be aligned right, otherwise things will still look odd (such as the ground in that image posted).

That seems a little harsh. He obviously knows how to make them, but maybe he''s not as good as other people at them, that's all.

its not a personal attack, and "knowing how to do displacements" includes making them sew ;)

Just like to say thanks to youme for this tutorial. It explained things very well, particularly how the sew function works. Laying out the terrain brushes correctly from the start is so crucial to getting it right. I'm very happy with my new terrain now :)

I have read a few tutorials on creating displacements. This is definitely on of the better ones. Great work.

Just like to say thanks to youme for this tutorial. It explained things very well, particularly how the sew function works. Laying out the terrain brushes correctly from the start is so crucial to getting it right. I'm very happy with my new terrain now :)

Being as i was making my first map i was unaware of the displacement/sew limitations. As a result my map is completely useless seeing as the cliffs are the key to the map. So you are right, laying out the brushes correctly with the idea of using displacements is vital.

Thanks Youme for the tutorial. I guess i will have to start again with these aspects in mind
