...community-based funding? That's ingenious.

That was my thought. Community based funding would not only help support big companies like Valve, but imagine what could come out of indie developers if they were liberated of the "I'm running out of money to feed myself every night" scenario.

Community-based funding sounds kind of cool, especially if you get more out of it in the end than just the game itself.

The one problem is that it requires you to have have faith in the game being good. For Valve, I feel like it's a safe bet that what they're making will be good, but I can't say there are many other developers I'd put that kind of faith in.

Pretty much what i was thinking. Also.. it doesn't give new developers much ground to stand on, as there's no portfolio for them to get the required kind of community support.
