[Contest Entry] Goldfield Gully

    Hello all, once again i bring you a map. This time i went with the good old fashion desert theme.

    The whole arena comprizes of 4 sections, The gully, The cave, The 2nd gully (mixed with some industrial buildings), and the final pit, each with there own capture point.

    My shadows are a bit off, i plan to fix those up on the final compile.

    So enough of my ticky-talk here are some pics. Keep in mind im trying to focus on finisihing the layout, for i wish to player test as much as possable (thats not to say i havent done a bit of detail work;)).

    Now with the rocket i decided to make my own custom particle effect for the rockets engine. So here it is. A built from the ground up rocket engine particle effect! (complete with after burner FXs)

    LOL sorry man, it was really just a place holder. Didnt mean to steal anything.

    Ill change it right now.

    Edit: Again im sorry, dont think of me as a theif. It was only a quick fix. I changed it.

    I've had some bad experiences with digital theft (or "recreation") before, so I can get irritated by things like that. But recognising it and agreeing to change it is great. :D

    Sorry if I sounded rude or harsh. Looks like it could be a fun map!

    This is so far from "digital theft" or "recreation" it's not funny. Come on mate, you can't go around drawing references to your own work simply because someone has a bomb on an angle, up against its cart. Or tracks on rails leading out a door. Which Valve has in goldrush. The two screens look completely different.

    Back on topic. The level looks interesting trey, I'd see the 3rd, higher up exit for Blu (in the screenshot below) being somewhat frustrating for Red engineers, I'd suggest moving it onto the opposite side of the canyon so Blu still has to gross the gap in order to get to the sentries. Otherwise an organised pyro+medic uber would wipe them out quite easily.

    I see what your saying. Its just i didnt want a spawn where a sentry could target all three (or more) spawns at a time. This elevated spawn will make the engi think more carfully with his spots, and really the first point isnt too nice to engi's. I might do this altreation if the feedback from the player testing is bad in that aspect.

    Anyway thanks for the feedback!

    Fair enough, however - a sentry that can target all 3 spawn exits at once, is also open to being attacked from all three exits at once - I couldn't see it lasting too long in that situation!

    This detail room is about as close to nineaxis' work as his is to valve. Nineaxis you need to realise how close yours is to other people's before you say theirs is close you yours....
    I'd just like to say: they're both shockingly similar to goldrush's detail room, and thats their main downfall (otherwise they both look like great detail rooms)

    Well, yes, mine is inspired by valve, but it is kind of hard to make a bomb assembly room that doesn't resemble Gold Rush's. If you compare mine to Gold Rush, or his to Gold Rush, they're very different. The point I'd like to make is that a bomb assembly line is a bomb assembly line, but there are infinite ways to position a bomb in the process of being assembled, plenty that don't look like mine or Gold Rush.

    I think you need to look at all three side by side before saying this is or isn't the same or near the same. I put my bomb that way to make it unlike Gold Rush. Different. Seeing someone else do near the same thing kind of irks me. He probably had no intent to copy me or steal anything, like I have no intent to steal anything from Valve. I'm just pointing out it is pretty similar, and that I'm therefore I'm slightly unhappy about it.

    Now, you guys could focus on his map instead of telling me I'm an idiot, thank you.

    Does that track that bends with a rail on one side have a collision mesh? It doesn't appear to be casting a shadow like your other track pieces. Just looks weird.

    edit: nvm, looking at it again, just looks like you have different lightmap scales on adjacent displacements.

    By doing near the same thing, you're talking about rotating a prop and stacking it in a certain way. If everyone claimed that this was their work then it'd be a very hostile environment. It's a common thing to do and to nit pick on such similarities is rather pedantic.

    You're not an idiot, just pedantic and a touch too sensitive ;) Your work is nice and you should be protective of it, but this is just a little too out of left field.
