I would have to agree with grazor about the random crits thing. If they are trying to make a balanced game then why throw that "randomness" into the fact? Also isn't there a crit formula that the better you are doing, the more crits you get or something like that?

No... No, they really can't.
I beg to differ, and so would a lot of other people!

Why do I see nobody complaining about headshots or backstabs?

Why do you think the huntsman was produced? Sure, it still headshots, but the point was it was developed because of a sense that the victim felt no connection with the sniper, or that they couldn't have avoided that death beyond not even presenting themselves at all.

But ultimately they are class related designs. Their weapons deal lesser damage than most but perform better under certain circumstances, ie headshots/backstabs. They are balanced with low base damage and low class health+vulnerability.

Whilst a soldier has massive health and the rocket launcher deals massive damage under most circumstances, and crockets kill even most overhealed classes. A single random crocket from some noob who only just joined a server and happened to run into a well executed assault can ruin perfectly good timing and team work that took minutes to setup.

Snipers and spy's are different, they need to work for their crit kills, especially spy's.

edit: Yes, there is a performance formula that increases crit chance. The more damage you do, the more chance of a crit for your next shot. I believe the max damage/crit chance was either braught down from 550 or down to 550 in X seconds. It was supposed to increase crit chances based on performance, as as it was, it was a rare occasion it was affected as such. Crits would normally be awarded after one had killed most of his enemies rather than during crucial combat.

Simply put, they're not random like crits, they're skill dependant. Crits are luck dependant.

EDIT: I have to admit that crits are *slightly* more bearable since VALVe updated their chance modifier mechanic. I think that they are a fair reward for achieving a large amount of damage in a short space of time. I certainly find it less annoying being killed by someone who's critting when I just saw them bury half a team beforehand. I can see that they earned those crits. Totally random crits still suck though.

Random crits, while the ultimate nit-picking fuel, are a good way to remove monotomy from the game. True, a crit can allow a terrible player to kill a good one, but it's often a lot better than the good player killing the bad player every single time. Also, crits allow a player to prioritize shots. If two heavies are gunning it out and one hears the other roll two seconds of crits, they're going to dash into cover until it's over. And of course, one can always go on the nocrits servers.

Because they're not random. They're entirely player dependent (except facestabs, but people complain about those).

Random crits are annoying because for no good reason whatsoever someone randomly gets triple damage and no damage fall off. 99% of the times that means your opponent is dead if you have the slightest clue, not because he was outplayed, but because of sheer stupid luck... which isn't fun.

Naso: Twilight and the Transformer Movies were also quite popular... Need I say more?
