When my video card fails

My friend's laptop always shows TF2 like images 3, 4, and 5. He can't play it because firing a weapon = crash. 
His is a low-end generic video card as opposed to a failing strong one, but still, same net results. I don't think he paid more than $10 for the entire Orange Box anyway (one of Steam's awesome super-discount sales), so we both agree it's more funny than tragic that his computer can't run it.
I'm liking pictures 6 thru 9. Someone ought to make a pick-up item that makes the entire game look like that, with those neon colors constantly moving like some sort of druggie laser show. Or Valve needs to make it a server-side option. That'd be sweet for some non-serious gameplay. :O

I guess my problems don't seem to be as bad... :O
If I don't have my computer's fans turned up to cool the graphics card down, different coloured dots will start to appear on the screen and some odd messed up polygons pop up when I'm playing TF2. It's particularly annoying when one is made on a weapon... because sometimes I can't see :/

It have happend to me too.
But by some reason a metal-door texture overlayed the screen, so only HUD was bugged
(try reading the chat, it's still kinda obvious what I said )
Same thing happend in gmod

Huh...mine actually lag spikes for a good 10-20 seconds, then when the game resumes it goes crazy
Also...my card isn't actually overheating
This actually used to happen just about every hour of gameplay, then a driver update reduced it to every once in awhile.
Usually this is caused by overheating or an excessive overclock, but you say it's neither?

Though considering its been stable for about a year, then this started about a month back...im not thinking the overclock was the reason...

Hardware suffers wear and tear, you know. If it's been overclocked for a year it may be starting to fail.
