hats are fine. customization is good imo. it's shit like crates&keys, distracting unusual effects, and polycount set hats that are bad. at least they don't have some new firmware set hats or anything like that that give you extra speed or something. just some nice gestures, taunts, hats and emotes. one thing i don't like is how it was basically a last minute idea and they implemented some tf2 hats instead of all portal-themed hats. not sure how much they stick out, but im guessing they hardly do.

You clearly can't read if you still believe that... The marketing started off only talking about the game itself, now its moving on to hats...? I wasn't referring directly to Portal itself in that statement either simply because it was made in a Portal thread, just Valve's marketing technique in general lately...

New players is fine... I've seen a shitload of old ones quit recently though because they dislike what the game has turned into... That I could do without... If you bought an old classic car a long time ago, you probably wouldn't be pleased if someone came around further down the line and said that you had to add all new instruments inside and repaint the thing... A lot of people I know feel that way about TF2, so they're selling off their backpacks and quitting TF2... It's lame...

And yeah, no major update is gonna go off without any hitches at all... but Valve could seemingly put a little more time into what they're doing and test things more thoroughly to get them right the first time, especially with TF2 Beta being a public game now... What's the point of the beta if there's still gonna be 2 or 4 or however many updates every month...?

You disagree, fine. You have your opinion, I have mine... Not everyone loves these changes to this game in the past year, not everyone hates them... Don't think I'm the only person out there getting burnt out on the frequency of updates (mainly because every tiny one requires immediate updating of my servers or no one can play on them) or the rate at which new items are being introduced, some adding an imbalance to the game between those with them and those without...

And on that note, I'm done replying to this thread... Maybe I'll go look for a different thread where someone else is offering an opinion on something, shoot it down and call them an asshole and an imbecile for thinking something different than I do... Maybe I'll fit in more around here then...

@ Frag, it really was. Why would anyone wanna wear that potato hat anyway? hehe

Well I took your statement to mean that having hats in portal was a marketing ploy, that's why I said it wasn't because no one knew about it.

Like I said though, the potato pack WAS a market gimmick. The hat, the Glados countdown, the reserection pin... The whole shebang.

Didn't work on me though ;) Didn't care about the pin, a potato hat didn't sound very cool (though it looks better than I had imagined it would), and the only game I even wanted to try in the pack was given to me.

I was quite surprised to find the Mann Co. Store greeting me upon logging in, but not unhappy.

Here's to hoping we'll see a strong Portal 2 mapping/modding community with a thriving set of Aperture Science stamp collection investment opportunities!

What's everyone think about that Super 8 tie in? I was sort of stunned when I saw that hiding at the bottom of the Extras list. It was certainly cool! But, like... right there? On release day? Embedded specifically in Portal 2 (like, couldn't be it's own sourcemod)?

Whether or not you want hats and stuff in Portal 2, I don't see why we should rush to vehemently defend the store in the game. They're charging money for something you can't otherwise get, when they could have let you unlock it. The way I see it they had an opportunity to make the game more fun, but instead chose to charge us money.

It's not the end of the world or anything (I don't see why customizing the bots is all that important). That's why I'm not that upset. But I really don't see any reason why people should be defending it; charging players more money in no way makes the game better than it was before...

I mean, imagine instead of begrudgingly paying $2 to get Atlus to spin his head around, you unlocked an Achievement that awarded you it, and then you went hunting for more achievements. That sounds a lot more fun than the paying money thing.

I can read just fine, yet i have still different opinion than you, amazing isn't it?
If you go down to this path because someone is not agreeing with you, you should go take a break or get some sleep and come back when you are less aggressive.

Wow... Enough with the endless hat gimmicks already... Whatever happened to marketing a game based on its innovativeness and enjoyment, not some frivolous ploy like an impractical, purely cosmetic hat...

This is probably why the TF2 team breaks the game and plugins like metamod every time they attempt to release a real update like last week, too busy grinding away on out-of-place hats instead of improving the game itself... Anyone else get the sense sometimes that they're just kind of winging it and learning how to program as they go? hehe. I dont see DICE releasing Bad Company 2 updates every week...

If I were on the Portal team, I'd glare at the TF2 guys and tell them to go away too...

DICE don't constantly try to improve and refine BC2 all the time.

Guys here is the answer and that answer is do you really care that much if theres hats or not.
There not marketing at all otherwise do you think we'd have the chance to get them as random drops?

I can and will ignore the store, it doesn't really bother me. My only issue here is that it seems silly for a game like portal 2 to even have a store and accessories in the first place.

I think everyone is missing the point of the Hat Store in Portal 2... its to introduce Valve's next game, Cave Johnson vs. Saxton Hale. Two very awesome people in one very awesome game. I can dream right?

Also, anyone else excited to open up that Super 8 teaser in Hammer?

I'm with Moose here. Personally, Valve just lost a few points in the 'unwritten rules that make you a cool developer' book, but once someone reaches their size I think it's a reality I need to face.

I still love P2, and TF2, and I'll still map for both :)
