Again voicing my opinion that future votes be on a scale of 1-10 for each map.

Picking a single choice is polarizing and not indicative of skill level, but most of all it's disheartening for new mappers not to receive a single vote. I look at the 0s next to their efforts and it's just really sad... A third party resource may be needed to orchestrate a voting scheme in this fashion

That said, GL to the finalists :)

If we use a scale, we should definitely not use the 1-10 scale

I mean, just look at it in use in other places (ie FPSB). Most rater's scales range from 7-10, and 1-5 is hardly ever used, except for poeple the few who vote in the extremes and throw it off. Hardly useful, and "perfect 10" is by definition impossible.

Instead, how about the simpler 5-star system?

* - Poor
** - Decent
*** - Good
**** - Very Good
***** - Excellent

all this really does is remove the unnecessary 1-5 levels and makes 10 reasonably feasible

You couldn't just do stars though. You'd need criteria to grade against.

For example, an entry may have really good gameplay but not look so pretty. Because of this, should it rank lower than a really pretty map with crap gameplay value?

Of course, a criteria is a separate concept. You could set up a criteria using separate star scales, or separate 1-10 scales.

We need to be clear what the goals are before an appropriate ranking/voting system can be chosen. If it's just to find the "best", then different (easier) methods exist compared to ranking the top 3, or ranking all of them.

If we have the same kind of contest (~32 maps and only looking for #1) then I'd do a single bracket and ask people to make a series of 1v1 decisions. It's easier to organize and decide. Then after a few days, do the next round...

The problem with that is that it means everything must be broken down into stages that take time. You can't just "drop your ballot in and go home".

What about a condorcet vote? (It's an interesting site, will automagically send poll links etc. to e-mail addresses, which provides a certain amount of anti-fraud-ness.)

Well with the tier system, what if we have a bunch of crap maps in Tier 1, and one moderate, and a similarly good map in Tier 2, but there's also an excellent map in Tier2?

Tier 1's moderatly good map will go on, but not Tier 2's because Tier2 gets taken by the excellent map. If I were that Tier2 that got cut off I'd feel cheated. "Well why did his moderate map get to go on by not mine?" Sure they probably wouldn't win the contest still, but it's discouraging and you wouldn't be encouraging new mappers.

This is along the same line as the poster up that a way ^^ that said all the maps with zero votes is discouraging.

Going back to the original problem of people not wanting to download and run around in 40-50 maps, I think we should make it a 2 part contest. Part 1 would be based entirely off of screenshots. People could post, say, 3 screenshots with their entry and the voting would be based off them. After that voting closes part 2 would start. People would download and look around in the top 5 or 10 maps and decide amongst those. Asking people to DL 10 maps is much more feasible than asking to DL 50.

I've put up an example poll page for folks to try out in this thread:

[ame="http://forums.tf2maps.net/showthread.php?t=9475"]Example Poll for possible future voting scheme - TF2Maps.net[/ame]

The system allows you to either rank everything or to separate maps into "great, ok, bad" or whatever way makes sense to you.

Had to vote for ned, but I'm one of the people that registered on the day of the vote last time. I've actually been here before and I thought I had an account but I was wrong so I made a new one, looking back it was probably quite suspicious to see an account that was made the last day of voting, and then immediately used to vote but I assure you I voted for the map I found was best.

If it comes to a draw, then whoever voted for Lord Ned should fight whoever voted for eerieone in a best of 3 on KotH_Nucleus. Let the rockets choose the victor!
