Even in gimp AND Photoshop I can't get anything to save as a .TGA and still be opaque... in photoshop it just whites out my alpha, in gimp it blacks out my alpha and wrecks the image... I can actually look at the channels in gimp unlike my PS elements 6.0, but i cant really edit the channels.
So, looks like I'll be bowing out of this contest without an entry too

Naw, I wasn't going to because I figured from the start since they weren't original. After i posted them in chat, [J] Doctor Killing was suggesting I do it anyway.
I think I need to recolor the white on the syn-tech one, seems a little too bright, then again there are white warning signs as well in the game. Hmm.

Well I'm pretty happy with mine since they're my first tf2 style "anything" and my first decals. But mine look like nothing compared to everyone else's. I don't know how you guys do it.

Thanks for the advise, but this one turned out to be the worst yet.
EDIT: I saved this as a jpeg, so it took out the alpha, but there were grey checkers in the holes of the first and all around both other than the black.

I know, but I cant make any targa or VTF that saves the transparentcy! they all end up white or black and usually there are large graphical glitches around the edges.

Ok, if you use photoshop, when you have all the parts you want to be transparent (checkers) flatten the image, but make sure you saved it as something else incase you want to change it later, and once it's flattened hold control and click on the image of the layer in the layer window. It will select all the transparent parts, then go into the channels window and create a new channel then press shift+F5 and click ok. then save as a vtf and you're done.

What are the limits on re-purposing old posters?
Here are two posters I did as background elements for another project.
These were old posters that were scanned in and the text was replaced.
I think they're a bit too dark - both in theme and color scheme - for the TF2 motif, but thought I'd ask for feedback...
I admit to being very inspired by Nineaxis' submissions, and think they really do justice to the TF2 theme. (Though, I would agree with the argument that even the most colorful propaganda will fade in the harsh light of the sun...
)I plan on submitting some original artwork based on an oil magnate theme, but wanted to see how dark I could go with the propaganda?
The last three images are (relatively) unaltered originals. Again, probably too dark? (And/or too colorful?)

The posters have to be made from scratch for this competition
I wish I could take credit, but they're all classic posters from the Art Deco era. (ca. 1920-1940)
I'm a big fan of the Art Deco style, but it's probably about 10-20 years early for the TF2 'universe.' (Maybe if I just make it older and dirtier...)
Muted tones, limited color palettes, and large areas of solid color seem to be the best choice for TF2. I've been Googling "ad art from the 40's" for inspiration.
Whatever I submit will definitely be created from scratch - no scans allowed.

I saw Heather play Bioshock, but didn't play it myself. I liked the style, but the storyline was a little too dark for me.
On the subject of Art Deco:
If you haven't seen it, I would strongly recommend the anime revisioning of the classic movie "Metropolis."
Another classic is 'Things to Come.' While the acting is melodramatic, the early FX pioneers did a wonderful job of envisioning the future. (Giant video screens, tunnel boring machines, etc.)
P.S. Almost done with my first entry. I came across a great set of silhouettes of the PC's, so I'll be doing a series of 'motivational' posters.

I thought I'd figured out this whole overlay thing.
I didn't have any trouble with the previous oil pump texturing, but I'm stymied by this one.
How do I import a VTF file so that I can apply it as an overlay?
