End of the world as we know it

Well, maybe. For those of you who don't know, the worlds largest particle accelerator, dubbed the Hadron Collider, will be turned on tommorow. Long story short, various types of atoms will be accelerated to near light speed in the hopes that they smash each other. In theory, the collision will be similar to the events of the big bang, and provide evidence of the god particle. I'm sure wiki has tons of details, but the jist of it is that this particle has no mass, but creates the mass of regular matter. After the discovery of quarks, said particle remains the last major unknown. Though it will take at least several weeks before the acceleration reaches 99% light speed. So we all have time to finish our maps and play Spore before the world gets sucked into a black hole

Oh, so they got through the lawsuits? I read an article a month or so back, and it mentioned one group suing because of the possibility that it would cause micro black holes. The defense argued that they happen all the time, and pass through the earth without issue. So the group came back and said yes, that is true. However, they aren't traveling so slow they might not escape the planet.

Anyways, I'm still holding out for 12/21/2012 for my doomsday (I live in earthquake ridden California, for those of you who know about the end of the epoch).

To be fair, the thing won't even reach 99% light speed for several weeks. And it's not micro black holes we should be concerned about. What has me worried is the unknown forces that will be unleashed as a result of creating the Higgs Boson particle.

I'm not to worried. The LHC won't cause too much of a threat. All we have to worry about is that new particle. That could be bad.

I mean people though the world was going to end when they tested the first atomic bomb. And Hey, we're still here now.

I thought they did a full speed run on the first day? They cancelled a dry run that was planned for a while back because it would have cost far too much. No actual collisions yet just full speed beams (and its more like 99.99% lightspeed. Its only 20,000Km/h less than the magic speed)

No, we're currently tied up with Iraq. Then we have to deal with Iran, North Korea, Russia, probably a few other countries. Then who knows, we might decide to actually TRY and find Bin Laden. After that we'll fix the black hole mess :bored:

HTe thing I find most amusing is that everyone is so worried, but if they read their science and actually studied something about the experiment they would realise that every precaution has been taken to avoid any problems of that magnitude.

On top of that the whole thing can be monitored by anyone live. Take a look at the live cameras here: http://www.cyriak.co.uk/lhc/lhc-webcams.html for example and you can see they checking in every 5 minutes or so.
