My compiles last 1 minute and a half, so there's not much to do.

Usually listen to music on winamp, or goin to the toilet.
Can't do much because it slows down the computer by around 95%.
And also it only takes around 10seconds - 2minutes (a bit less if I turn of VVIS) to compile, so it's not like you get much time to do something.

Running vrad alone takes 13 minutes... I think I have done something wrong :D
But vbsp and vvis are quite fast, so I think it's my lightmap-size ^^

But in the 15 minutes of compiling, my pc is unuseable (due to the heavy compile load of 100% per core), so that's the time my gaming handhelds strike back.

If I touch my computer while it's compiling, everything asplodes and Hammer crashes. It's always been like that, and this laptop is pretty good as well.

So I just go get something to drink or eat, go to the toilet, play some random DS game...

I just sit behind my computer waiting till it's done.. Because I only have 1 minute (maximum) to check everything in TF2 after the compile before my computer crashes :p

22 FPS is a very acceptable frame rate while my processor is at 100%. My compile takes 1 minute and a half (actual compile) no matter what I'm doing on the PC.

Also I don't mean to play while compiling. I test my map on local server, that's what I meant

I test, then I compile and run around the map. No paradox

As someone with an old machine and low framerates, I can say that framerate really only effects playing difficulty when it gets down to around 10. :p
pish posh. I found it was incredibly easier when my framerates jumped from ~35 to ~130

LOL, I play TF2 at <20 FPS in general.

For a generally complete map, compiles for me are anywhere between 20-60 minutes, so I either do some school work, make something to eat or watch some 24 (which I am officially 4 hours behind on...) since my computer becomes unusable.

I browse the internets because I use VBCT which doesn't turn my PC is a sluggish POS.
