I'm learning portal mapping, and this is my first attempt at making puzzles.
Trying to focus more on actual portal placement and tricks rather than the new toys. However, that doesn't mean I won't use them later, but I will probably keep it in moderation for this series. Detailing, texturing and lighting has been left at bare minimum since it's not my focus at the moment.

Download:
v3: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1281220/portal2/sp_ravidge_test3.zip
Current length: 2 chambers.

How to play:
Unzip the archive in your portal2/maps folder.
Load up portal 2, open the console and type in: map sp_ravidge_test (and hit enter)
This will take you to a lobby map where you can choose which chamber to play. After that levels will change automatically.

Please record demos of you playing each chamber, seeing people think and solve is the best feedback. If you can't solve the puzzle, that is perfect data too and seeing those demos are even more helpful.

Hey
I recorded a demo of my play through. I hadn't played Portal 2 since it came out so I was a bit rusty!

The first chamber seemed easy to work out but I think I figured out a different way of completing it - unless that was the intention.

Second chamber seemed good, had to think about it and it was a clever puzzle. Nice work!

Really liked playing through what you have so far, I know you said you haven't detailed much but it still looks and feels really nice

I loved solving the second chamber while in the air, it was fun, but when trying to get across to the door at the end, I kept having trouble trying to orient myself so I could shoot a portal where it was needed. Can't remember if it shows in that demo, but the second time I played (w/o recording) it took me a long time.

Cool! you solved both chambers in your own way :)
The first chamber has 3 solutions that I know of, and you picked one that is a little tricky because of the portal funneling built into the game.
The second chamber you really didn't do what I expected though. You didn't use the faith plate at all, which made your solution a little more finicky than It should be (careful balancing on the angled platform). It's cool though, but I will fix that.

Thank you, I had fun watching that.

I probably need to streamline the first chamber a bit since people seem to do crazy stuff and complicating for themselves (I've seen demos of that chamber before this thread).

Hmm I had a feeling that the second way wasn't intentional as well, but hey, it's very satisfying to find these emergent solutions. That was one of the (minor) problems I had with the main game, everything felt linear with one solution.

Thanks for all the demos so far, best feedback ever. also as I saw in joodudes demo, you can type in the chat and it will be recorded in the demo playback too, so if you have some immediate comments while testing, you could always leave it there.. most of the time I can kinda understand what's going through your head though (I think!)

I've done some touches to both chambers to prevent some of the unwanted solutions I've been seeing. But I probably created another way unintentionally :)

Unless there's a major bug in this one, I'm gonna leave it until I have a 3rd chamber ready to release.

Here's my playthrough of the new version http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3494096/moose_ravchambers.rar

I really enjoyed the first chamber, I had to actually think about it for a second. Your second chamber was actually pretty easy, but I used the faith plate more than I needed to, and kept forgetting the cube. That clip you have that directs you into the exit door threw me off, since I ended up using the faith plate earlier than you intended.

I didnt enjoy the first one much, i kept JUST skimming this ledge.

It felt more finicky than fun, like failing by a tiny bit. That combined with the fact i couldnt actually figure it out the first time, and you have a recipie for frustration. In contrast, I loved the second, and could have happily replayed the second chamber again and again. Big, clear, smooth jumps are way more fun than little fiddly ones.

Possibly simply upscaling the first chamber by a fair chunk might help?

You did perfectly on the first chamber, if only you would have jumped into the first portal instead of just dropping you would have solved it. Multiple times.
I fixed this in the newest release by literally forcing you to jump :)

I don't really know what these correspond to, good luck

I didn't like the first chamber because I don't like that kind of solution. Maybe I did it wrong, but I didn't know why the platforms moved out or anything like that. I felt like I was breaking it or making it too hard and missing something simpler.

The second was a lot better. A bit odd, but much much better. I also may have solved that the wrong way. I think I get this feeling just because they are custom so I am worried.

I think the solution to the second one is neat but it feels frustrating to get.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/813382/Portal 2/sp_ravidge_test.zip

You get an award for most needlessly complicated and complex solution imaginable in chamber 2.

Unrelated:
It seems many people ignore the helpful floor texturing I did on the portal surfaces in chamber 1. Should I make it more clear or keep it as is? Even the people who solve it relatively well are for the most part doing one portal trip extra due to a planning error (I assume).

(also I'd like to comment on everyone's demos because there something interesting in all of them. But I'd just clutter up the thread. But trust me, I'm having a blast looking at each and every attempt)

here is my "run" through, i'm sorry but you made me feel really dumb in the first chamber, didn't complete it until i finally realised how to do it after I did the 2nd chamber. I also added some feedback in the game itself.. don't know of how much use it is though.

sp_ravidge_test_dabprun = chamber 1 (didn't solve it this first time)

sp_ravidge_test_dabprun_2 = chamber 2

sp_ravidge_test_dabprun_3 = lobby (don't bother opening it)

sp_ravidge_test_dabprun_ch1-2 = chamber 1 and how i completed it.

I do have a general feeling though your chambers (especially n° 1) are a little small .. I really hate playing in those cramped rooms. I'd love to have some more moving space.

Anyone else making p2 maps get this problem that I have?
I've scrapped 3 completely different versions of a 3rd chamber.. I can't seem to find a balance between "too easy" and "uuuh... this is insanely complex".

I have these initial ideas, like a certain jump I want to incorporate or a small feature involving light bridges.. but on it's own it's just not a challenge, so I add more, and suddenly I have a beast level without any sense of direction or logic :(

I might just replay a few chapters and refresh my memory of how some stuff is made in a logical fashion.

I'm definitely getting that problem. I've scrapped lots of chambers, mostly for the too easy slant but...

I overall felt that the chambers were quite rewarding to complete but were annoying with the simple concepts, that were made maybe a bit too far complex.
Chamber 1 -small cramped and annoying even lossing a tiny bit of momentum cost dear. Also the cramped space was confusing and 'affected' me as I played.
Chamber 2 - Took me a while to do this one as It involved alot of spining and angle ajusting.
