The model for the trophy belt does not include the sniper hat, it works like an attachment to the player model. Just like the backburner is to the flamethrower.

Making the entire trophy belt hat paintable would mean editing the much larger player skin.

yes, but isn't the hat not actually part of the snipers head because of the hatless hat, and therefore by association, should be paintable. If it's not, then why not just have the usual sniper hat hidden or however the mechanics work for other hats and then copy the model into the trophy belts, shouldn't be all that difficult should it?

The Sniper's hat is a submodel, meaning it can be made invisible and shifted around on his person (as with the melee taunt) at will, all while still being technically part of his model as a whole. (That's my understanding of a submodel anyway...) It's just made invisible for the hatless version and while he wears other hats. It doesn't have its own separate files from the Sniper himself.

Surely you can just make the attached one invisible and add the model to the trophy belt model. edit: this was probably posted already

Yeah. Basically it's just part of the sniper model. It's has it's own vertex group, and you can animate vertex groups. When the sniper dies, his hat doesn't fly off. Same with the trophy belt since the belt is just attached to the bip_head bone in the hat vertex group.

Team Fortress 2 Update Released
Product Update - Valve 16:14
Updates to Team Fortress 2 have been released. The updates will be applied automatically when your Steam client is restarted. The major changes include:

Team Fortress 2
Added check to prevent control characters from user-provided item names and descriptions (replaced with spaces).
Fixed a control point bug where players could capture points that were already owned by their team.
Fixed a server crash caused by kicking a player that isn't fully connected.
Fixed Spies being able to destroy sappers using the "destroy" command.
Fixed Engineers being able to destroy sapped buildings by issuing the command directly in the console.
Fixed an issue where team colored hats were showing up improperly when previewing the Team Spirit paint on them.
Fixed an issue where SourceTV clients were seeing their local player/duel stats in the scoreboard.
Updated the player_hurt event to always set "damageamount" even if the attacker is the world (falling damage).
Updated items:
Many hats have had their appearance while painted improved. Paintable hats should now appear less like solid blobs of color and retain more of the character and texture of the hat.
Integrated several improvements to contributed items provided by their authors.
Made the following items paintable: Sergeant’s Drill Hat, Pyro’s Beanie, “Dangeresque, Too?”, Whiskered Gentleman, Safe’n’Sound, Trophy Belt, Frenchman’s Beret, Camera Beard, Max’s Severed Head, Alien Swarm Parasite, Ellis’ Cap, and the Horrific Headsplitter.
Sam & Max items and the Portal 2 Pin are now Gift Wrappable.

Update is out!

What is this with "multiple improvements"

If you mean the "Integrated several improvements to contributed items provided by their authors" bit, I know they added fixed models for smoothing group errors that valve did to some of the contributed items, I know NeoDement has been complaining about his Skullcutter being borked since it was added.

Yeah I agree. I like this patch a lot too. Most of my hat collections look a lot better. The Fancy Fedora no longer looks like a plastic childs toy hat. The purple on my Hustler's Hallmark looks a lot better though. I just hope they can change the Trophy Belt as I mentioned in prior posts.

And if I am not mistaken someone (I think ABS) said something about Valve possibly fixing func_rotating in TF2.

Well. So much for that. :p Not that I had much hope; I mean, if they've gone this long without fixing it, it's probably a safe bet they straight-up don't want to.
