a hot thing in a cold place
Explore a volcanic temple of fire, deep within the earth, below a melting glacier.
My entry into the Hot & Cold - Detailing Contest 2023.
This was my 4th time participating in a detail contest, after a 3 year hiatus, and I won third place!
I was inspired by a lot of different videogames, most The Legend of Zelda series, for this entry.
A lot of the detail ideas came straight from my head, I didn't really reference too many examples; only for feeling.
There is very little prop usage on this map (probably to my detriment). Most of what you see is carefully crafted brushes and displacements.
I spent a lot of time getting the lava to look just right, even creating a custom blend texture for it to cool into a blackened, cooled form. Careful manipulation of the displacement vertices was used to get the lava to speed up in freefall, and slow down in compression. I studied lots of volcano footage on youtube! Specifically the volcanoes in Hawaii, since they have a specific type of lava that flows smoothly.
Probably my biggest regret was not spending enough time on the cold element of my entry up above, and skimping on general detailing.
