Wow. So, I guess this really means it's F2P?!?

Like many people have stated; it isn't free to play because F2P is an alternative to monthly payments. It's just a free game.

And a damn good thing, or else Valve undercuts the very profit-mechanism (Mann Store) that F2P is meant to help, due to all the farming accounts.

I suspect that's why they made it free this week, knowing that people were more likely to want to buy it this week than any time recently and would get uberpissed if it became free just afterward.

Still waiting for the mainsite to finish updating. It looks like it has but is getting hammered like crazy right now. I bet it's connected to the same pipe as the game, which is undoubtedly being downloaded by the thousands.

Also, all the total l33t pros complaining (not here, elsewhere) about TF2 being free to play are pathetic. Oh noes, there are going to be NOOBS in this game! Old grandpa Played-Since-Beta wants this kids off his dang lawn!

Seriously, it's not as if a bunch of hipster Angry Birds players and computer illiterate old ladies are going to suddenly start flooding pubs. Most people who would like a class-based multiplayer online FPS are already playing TF2. Those who don't were probably either too young, too poor, or too into other games in 2007-2008 to buy TF2, and they probably just haven't felt like paying for an old game since then.

Personally, I doubt this will effect the servers I play on, but I'm all for anything that will bring new players in. Annoying noobs either get better, play only on bad servers, or stop playing. I think making the game free to play will convince a lot of people who never coughed up the 20 bucks before to try it out, and at least some of them are bound to get really into it.

I... think I'm going to be staying away from gaming sites for a while. Even the good ones. This is bound to get ugly. In fact, if I didn't play exclusively on our servers, I'd probably stay away from the game itself because, ironically, all the people screaming constantly over mic chat about how the game is RUINED FOREVER are going to make it completely unbearable for a while.
