This contest is starting at 9PM GMT of Friday the 4th and it will end at 9PM of Monday the 7th. Please be fair and don't do anything before the start. Naturally you're free to start sketching your map's layout on paper. You can do anything except starting the actual map.

I had the idea to host this mini-contest. You will basically have to create a map in 72 hours (3 days from now) without any multiplayer testing (singleplayer is allowed, but no bots). It doesn't need to be detailed. What you have to focus on is to get it to play good without any clue of how it actually plays. The winner will be the map which plays the best, not the best-looking one. Naturaly, if you feel you're done with the construction and gameplay, you can go ahead to give it a good look. But remember that won't influence the results of the contest.

Rules (read carefully):
  • Do not start your map before 9PM GMT on Friday the 4th of June 2010.
  • No size limit for the map
  • Maps must be able to hold up to 32 players (16 per team)
  • All gamemodes are allowed, but I suggest using a gamemode which doesn't need much work to create maps for (you only 72 hours)
  • 3D skybox is allowed
  • Must submit one screenshot and a .BSP.
  • Custom content is allowed, but only made entirely by yourself using your own resources, Valve's content or if is available to the public as of now (Made by someone else).
  • You are allowed to use A Boojum Snark's resource library for pre-built gamemode bases, props and prefabs, or any other libraries posted here on TF2Maps.net, like the lighting library.
  • Maximum of two entries.
  • You are not allowed to run multiplayer test of your maps in any way. Bots are not allowed either. You can only run trough your map in single-player. Your map will be disqualified if it doesn't meet this restriction.
  • Do not share your map's .bsp or .vmf with anyone until the contest is over.
  • Your submission MUST follow this naming convention: <gamemode>_<nickname>_72.bsp (If you're forum name is stupidly long, compromise on your name, not the prefix. eg. pl_tera_72.bsp for TerabyteST's entry). For multiple entries, append a number at the end of it.
  • Everything must be finished and submitted in the upload thread before 9:00PM GMT on Monday 7th June 2010! The contest upload thread will be up 2 days before the contest ends.
  • Try to focus on gameplay more than detail and looks, and do what you think will play best without the aid of any testing. When you will feel you'll be done with gameplay you can obviously try giving it a good-looking coat, but always remember gameplay is the only thing that counts on the final score.

We obviously can't know wether you have tested your map (multiplayer or bots) or not, but we hope you will be fair to the rules and to other participants and you won't test it in any way.

In your submission (in the submission thread, will be posted at a later date):
  • A link to your .bsp in one compressed (.zip or .bz2) achive. Use the tf2maps.net contest area or dropbox.
  • Please make sure ALL content is pakrat'd into your BSPs, but remember that you must be the author of all content submitted.
  • You should provide only one screenshot of your map, taken at the best gfx quality your pc can handle, no HUD elements or player models either. For more infomation on how to do this, click here.
  • You should name the two games you would like to recieve if you won and your original Steam nickname or SteamID.

Contest Prizes:

1st place:

  • One (1) game of choice (from Steam) which costs less than 10€ or 12 USD.
  • 1 month of vip privileges on TF2Maps.net.
2nd place:

  • One (1) game of choice (from Steam) which costs less than 10€ or 12 USD.

I will be using my money to gift these games.

I will also probably be able to get the admins to append one or two months of donator to the list. Keep connected to hear any news.

Any questions? Ask away! (You can also add me on steam. Nickname: TerabyteST)

I hope the awesome prizes will motivate people to create maps for this contest.

And now, time to get mapping!

How would you see if a person is testing with bots?

Important notice: after a discussion with other members of TF2maps.net there has been mayor agreement in changing this contest's runtime from two weeks to 72 hours only. It will be a nice experiment to see how you can work when pushed by short-term deadlines.

Remember to focus on gameplay mostly, and to make sure your map is playable.

Dude not cool. At all! I understand that 72 hours might be kinda a cool experiment but pulling a bait and switch like that is an ass-hat move.

What? It was an entirely mutual agreement between people in the chat. We all came to an agreement that this is better.

I am trying to make the point that it is inconsiderate to others when you change a contest so drastically without giving them (and that means more then just chat at any given time) ample time to give input.

There is a way to make sure that everyone that enters the contest only uses 72 hammer hours.
Might be a bit complicated, but on the steam profile it says "Recently played" and the number of hours "played hammer" the last 2 weeks and in total. Those hours have to be checked and written down by the contest leader to ensure a fait competition.

EDIT: Nevermind my post I understood the contest wrong

I too love speed mapping events, wish there were more of em. Most mapping contests tend to drag on imo. Even though I own all of those games, I'll give it a shot.

He changed it 90 minutes after he posted it. It's not like people had been decided to enter for a long time before he changed it. He could have made it 72 hours right from the beginning and nobody would have noticed/cared.

I doubt I'll be participating, seeing as I just did one of these by myself.
