There's never been a better time to submit

Over the weekend we hit a new landmark, with over ten million dollars paid out to over 400 contributors and partners. And close to $250,000 of that figure will be paid out to the sixty-plus people who created the Robotic Boogaloo update.

If you just read that last paragraph and are kicking yourself for not making that beard of bees sketch a reality, here's the good news: We've also done a bunch of work improving the item submission tool, so it's never been easier to submit. The tool now automatically tests new creations against a set of standards, meaning anything you create is now significantly more likely to be game-ready.

You can now also see how your items will render on TF2 characters within the tool, making the creation process itself even quicker. Plus, every item submitted through the tool will now be tagged with a gold star, showing everyone that it's been vetted. FYI, our next update is going to ship exclusively with "gold star" items, and there's going to be no limit on how many we'll include. (Check out the Workshop FAQ for more info.)

In short, there's never been an easier, faster or more rewarding time to submit to the Workshop. If you're not making that beard of bees dream a reality, let's face it, at this point it's probably a motivational problem on your end.

Allow me to add the caveat they forgot.

There has never been a better time to submit to the new order in which millions of dollars are spent on useless polygons and people care more about buying and trading them than actually playing what used to be the best multiplayer FPS in the world.

EDIT: Oh, and the game grows to take up about 50 GB on your hard drives because they want everyone who designed a popular item to get it in the game no matter how stupid it is.

According to Valve, third-party TF2 designers were paid $250,000 for the Robotic Boogaloo update alone

They are probably covering it less about the system, more about the "hey, community modders and modding communities CAN be successful" (I haven't read any of the articles yet). Which, is kind of big news.

Robin has stated that they do want to get better rewards for map makers, they just don't know how because it's just harder to do.

EDIT: and frankly, most of this community hasn't been to helpful on coming up with ideas

Well, if the game itself still cost money, I'd say that since the maps are part of the game, their creators should get a cut of the sales of the game. Simple enough. I guess since revenue for the game comes from item sales, they could take a percentage of the 75% Valve keeps from that and divvy it up among mapmakers every few months, maybe based on the stamp distribution. Even if it were just 5% or so, any given mapmaker would probably be pulling in more than any one item creator since we're talking about all item sales combined.

I just want to clarify that no one ever said tf2m needs to drown in money. I'm pretty sure everyone here is okay with the process that has been used in the past. it's not like someone here would refuse an offer from valve I don't think.

(else everyone would have quit mapping to make hat money)
