An update to Team Fortress 2 has been released. The update will be applied automatically when you restart Team Fortress 2. The major changes include:

  • Added "Only allow map files" to the possible selections in the download filter option for clients
  • Fixed a client crash related to the material system
  • Fixed Diamond/Carbonado Botkiller weapons using incorrect team materials for the arms
  • Fixed a vphysics regression where some items would travel farther than they should
  • Improved performance and stability for the Linux version
  • Removed range restrictions from viewmodel_fov_demoUpdated the Ap-Sap so it can be gift-wrapped and have custom names/descriptions applied to it

Guessing that now MVM includes an unstoppable robo-crate that requires an in-game purchase of a robo-key to stop it?

This seems neat.

I remember someone saying how much of a boon it would be if quickplay servers could run custom maps, and this seems like a step in the right direction, at least.

But quickplay servers can already have tons of downloaded content.

I don't understand : what will it do ?

When searching to play on a server, many of the people on this site are the kind that like to play custom maps. However, there are many kinds of custom maps: there are the kinds that you see in the "Featured" section on this site, and there are the kinds that are played on minecraft warioware randomizer pony mod, which also require you to download different skins so that you can recognize the admin and supporters by their Bugs Bunny character models. Only allowing the download of custom maps means that this type of server can be avoided, and you won't be downloading extra content you don't want for the exclusive use of one server's custom mods.

My only problem with that is how many servers are we going to end up in that are like dm_orange_v74 and how few are going to be real custom map servers?

Well, if we think someone should be allowed to decide what counts as a "real" custom map and what doesn't, why not just expect Valve to add more community maps to the game?

Oh right, because practically nobody plays the ones they already have adopted as it is, quickplay or not. I think the problem has less to do with quickplay and more to do with lack of interest in maps that, to the typical player, might as well be swapped out for similar maps that Valve made. The only interest most of them have in "custom" maps is the ones that go way outside the parameters of vanilla TF2 in one way or another. And that's been the case since before quickplay or free-to-play happened.
