Someone requested some Japanese style paper lanterns, so I threw some together:

Two different models. One long, one round. Comparable in size to the 2Fort lantern model. ~1000 polys, but the LOD of ~500 kicks in quickly at 12 pixel units.

Six textures at 512x512, self-illuminating. These work best if you turn off all shadows, make them non-solid, and then stick a light entity of a similar colour inside them with brightness of 8-10.

Readme available in download. Yes, you can use these in contests, but please give credit if you do. :)

DESCRIPTION:

* ~1060 polys
* LODs of ~500 @ 12 pixel units
* Textures are 512x512 w/ alpha

INSTRUCTIONS:
Unzip this archive to the "SteamApps\[USERNAME]\team fortress 2\tf\" directory and content should be placed automatically.

In a map, these work best if you disable the prop's shadows & self-shadowing, make the props NON-SOLID, and place a similarly
coloured light entity at their center with a brightness of ~8-10.

This is an original model created with XSI Mod Tool and Adobe Photoshop CS.


USAGE:

You are free to use this in any Team Fortress 2 map, including contest-related maps (if contest rules allow custom content).

Do not modify or redistribute without asking me first.

Yeah, that's why it cuts to the 500 really quickly. I would have gone back and dropped the whole thing to 400-500, but the 2Fort lantern uses nearly 1000 with no LOD so I figured I may as well leave it. :p

Oh. The blue-grey lantern says 善戦 (ぜんせん)("zensen") which more or less means "fight the good fight." Seemed appropriate. The red one, I'm not really sure cause I don't know that first kanji. Something about a gate, maybe.

You people make me cry. These are Japanese lanterns. Make lanterns that fit other asian cultures if you want to make anything but japansese. Or at least reskin the ones with kanji on them. :r

08-31-2010 -- Updated this set with larger variants at x1.5 scale per request.

Uses the same textures and still includes the original smaller ones, so if you've already downloaded these models, only extract the model files named "paper_lantern01b" and "paper_lantern02b" (or extract all of them and click "yes" when prompted to replace the files).
