how could I make them? could I use a brush or would I need someone to make a custom model for me?
Hmmn. You MIGHT get away with some displacement work.
Make a shape similar to a slagmite, (big to smaller, big to smaller, etc)
make them into displacements and subdivide them.
If you want to make a quick one, just create a brush (spike) and change how many sides you want.
Blade that just lacks though.
I think if you wanted to make it with displacements, you'd make a cylinder with however many sides, and then narrow the sharp end. Make all sides but the base a displacement and do what Lord Ned said. Oh, and bubble out the tip.
You really will want a model with a normal map on it, that would be the best.
After playing around a bit with displacements, subdivide, noise, powerlevel changes, etc.
Could probably make it more bumpy, but i dunno,.

Arn't there some in the Half-Life 2: Episode Two caves level you could base them off?
On 2nd thought...those may be props
I'm making some for my level, I'm using modelled props in Max and will release them when I'm done if you can wait a little.
