Is this constantly happening, or only once in a while?

This happens 99% of the time (at least for me). It's not a big deal, just wait for it to finish.

    Use VBCT.

    Report back.

It's not actually freezing. Hammer just cares more about compiling than updating the UI. It will finish if you leave it.

You should still use Hammer's compiler when you cordon to test something quickly, though. VBCT is something I (and I think most people) use for compiling a release.

I avoid VBCT because it's inconvenient. I use the in hammer compiler only.

I used the hammer compiler, but switched over to VBCT, though I agree with nrd, it is an inconvenience

Yeah, use Hammer directly only for small cordoned work, VBCT for everything else.

It seems odd they wouldn't "properly" multithread it, though.

Yeah, a lot of that stuff is flaky, especially when Steam is updating itself or games. A lot of "bugs" filed for PackBSP boil down to: "Your SDK is broken. Restart and blame Valve instead."
