Just started adding lighting to my map using lighting from this thread's map.

Went to compile my map and got this:

What happened? What do I do to make this not happen anymore?

Is this constantly happening, or only once in a while?

This happens 99% of the time (at least for me). It's not a big deal, just wait for it to finish.

    Use VBCT.

    Report back.

    I shall do just that!

EDIT: VBCT worked beautifully. This issue just started for the first time for me. However, VBCT was able to compile the map perfectly.

So screw Hammer's compiler :D I'm gonna go finish work on the lighting on my map :D

It's not actually freezing. Hammer just cares more about compiling than updating the UI. It will finish if you leave it.

You should still use Hammer's compiler when you cordon to test something quickly, though. VBCT is something I (and I think most people) use for compiling a release.

I avoid VBCT because it's inconvenient. I use the in hammer compiler only.

I used the hammer compiler, but switched over to VBCT, though I agree with nrd, it is an inconvenience

Well now for some reason VBCT won't even compile my map (after I've updated the bloody thing A TON with new lighting). I just basically finished the map and went to compile it....and this:

Nevermind, after shutting down Steam and VBCT, then restarting them, everythings working properly.

Yeah, use Hammer directly only for small cordoned work, VBCT for everything else.

It seems odd they wouldn't "properly" multithread it, though.

Yeah, a lot of that stuff is flaky, especially when Steam is updating itself or games. A lot of "bugs" filed for PackBSP boil down to: "Your SDK is broken. Restart and blame Valve instead."
