Including materials and models

Hi.

I'm new to Hammer and I've made a TF2 map which is a recreation of a L4D map. I have lazily just copied all L4D models and materials into the TF2 folders, and it works alright. Problem is that there's probably only a selected few of these that are actually used. How would I go about figuring out the specific ones? Alternatively, is it possible to 'pack' these materials and models with the map file?

Thanks
Mecha

It is possible (using pakrat, a quick google will take you to that) but it's illigal since you're distributing something valve are selling (L4D assets) for free.

So whilst it's possible you'll find very very few people here who support it.

Hi.

Thanks for the reply. I will look into the tool and post further. I know that what I am doing is probably not morally correct, but I am in no way distributing the gameplay of L4D, only the environments. It doesn't add anything from L4D to TF2 except the map, and thus being nothing like L4D. On the other hand, the TF2 and L4D players will have a laugh.

When Youme said L4D assets, he doesn't just mean the code/gameplay. He means the models, textures, and environment too. (Unless he doesn't mean this, in which case I'm putting words in his mouth, but I'm pretty much 90% positive he means this.)

Basically, don't do this.

Hi.

I am practically done with the map, and I think it'd be a shame to throw away a working map like that. While I do see where you're coming from and get your points, I don't think its that bad. If I could somehow make it take the textures and models directly from L4D, so that it would require L4D, I would have done so, but there isn't any way to do that unfortunately. The map is mostly only for myself, friends and forum anyway, I doubt I am putting it up on places like fpsbanana.

I have yet to check out the two tools mentioned, I will do this later today. If I have any questions regarding it, I will post them.

Actually I'm pretty sure you can, but you (and everyone who plays your map) need to modify one file in your tf2 folder.

See this page for more info

it does work if you OWN both games. I however don't own L4D so if you pak up models from that game and distribute with a TF2 map I get them for free.

You should read the EULA. It clearly states that Valve is against this.

Hi

the page you linked confuses me more than help me on the issue. Would you mind elaborating?

Don't bother with the tables crap, basically it says you can only use a game's content if the user owns this game. It also specifically says that you are not allowed to redistribute the content of a game or mod without permission from the author (and in the case of l4d, don't bother asking)

The part you may want to check is this, basically, by doing some modifications to your gameinfo.txt file, you could tell the game to look in your left4dead folder for models and stuff.

The problem is, now that I think of it, I'm not sure the Orange Box Source engine can read the packages from left4dead...

Hi.

I have tried the pakrat tool, and it seems to attach the materials, models, etc. alright, because the file size increases dramatically. However, when I load the map on another PC, all models and textures are reported missing. Any ideas what I am doing wrong?
