Right now, sponsorship is the solution for members who want to financially assist tf2maps. For their effort, they get the ability to upload maps, as well as some limited privileges on the server. They also get larger avatars.
Many, I expect, don't care about server privileges, but everybody likes to look shiny in front of other people. With that spirit in mind I suggest micro-transactional avatar hats. Hats would be superimposed in their own <div> above avatars, scaled and positioned according to user preference. Here's a sample:
The majority of hats could be priced the same, perhaps less than 5 dollars; those with javascript particle effects could cost quadruple or more the cost.
