I'm back again and this project is revived once more! I don't see any model WIP threads in this subforum, but whatever, you're getting one. The goal now is to make the cart completely custom, except for the bottom of the cart's base (i.e. wheels, etc). I hope to finally get this out in early September (maybe on the 2-year anniversary of the start-date of this project). For those interested, here is an image of the evolution of Pinch: A history of Pinch

For links to the old threads, see here:

1st Revival of Pinch Thread

and here:

Original WIP Pinch Thread

The latest version before restarting this project was this:

Current version. The cart base and dispenser have not been edited yet, but here is the payload (keep in mind I may make small changes to the model, and the texture is not done). The sign on the front of the payload has been criticized, and I'm undecided if I should change it. The sign indicates a radiation hazard, though others may think it simply means 'nuclear'. The pinch will create an EMP instead of your typical big boom:

Also, Hear the current explosion sound.

Looking at possible changes to the green glow (I think I'll include skins for the glow, as well as teams):

I don't like the green color. It's too ehm... Can't come up with the word. But the white version is looking goood.

Also, the explosion sound is pretty nice. It sound if all the electronics are shutting off, and thats good right? Since it's an EMP :p.

I agree, the green looks weird but the white looks great.

The sound probably should have a bit more of a climax, you know, like a bang or swoosh or strong wind or something that let's people know it's actually gone off.

Either way, would go awesome in a map.

So this is what is going to cause th end of the world.... The blue and white go together, as said before the green looks abit strange.

I Liking the 'bomb'. As people said before the green looks strange, the white looks better, I assume the coil and radiation sign is self illuminated? I think the coil would look good in Aqua (#00FFFF) or Aquamarine (#7FFFD0), also maybe make the radiation sign look like this:
faopmaaci.jpg

to help show it only emmits a wave or something similar. The sound is a good start but it needs to be beefed up a bit

I liked the green version better. It looked more dangerous and nuke-u-ler-ish.

EDIT: Nevermind, I actually read the initial post and saw that it's supposed to be an EMP. White fits that better.

oh, another thing i noticed is that when the bomb is white there is still a green glow under the bomb. ( on the cart itself, pic #4)

i'm not sure if that is actually a glow or just some radio-active trash or something... :p

I do like the white version better, but the green has potential. I think you just need to mute the green a bit, make it less pronounced by whitewashing it some. Maybe even make it more white than green but still give it a greenish tint.

Oh wow, all you green haters. The GREEN IS GONE. The residual green glow on the cart's base is leftover from before (and will be fixed at some point). White doesn't quite do it for me, but I have ideas. The front sign/panel is also being replaced. I won't be able to post updated pics 'til the weekend.

As for the 'explosion' sound... if you can't hear it very well, you probably don't have much bass. The sound is not going to have that same climax as a normal explosive because, well, it doesn't explode - it 'pinches', or 'shockwaves'. Though, the idea of the Pinch is based on the Explosively pumped flux compression generator, which does use an explosive to trigger the EMP. Anyways, the sound does need work. I'll have to find something that sounds schockwave-ish, and is audible on most systems.

Now, for some random facts:

Ocean's Eleven did base their pinch on real equipment, though in reality, it would be much larger and not nearly as effective.

The demoman is Don Cheadle.

And, a real-life z-pinch:

Funny you're reviving this, I actually did something similar not too long ago, and I'll show you once I find it. My advice is, while the real thing doesn't have much going on visually, this is a video game. People will start to wonder why they brought it there when it just glows and then a few electronics stop working. I personally added some spinning parts, a particle effect, and in my case it destroyed (I wish it could have disabled) all the sentries within 1024 units of it. In short, you need to REALLY communicate the purpose of this, and make sure it feels climactic.

I really like this cart. One problem I have with it is how empty it feels, though, and it doesn't really look like an EMP either.

A red version would probably look fine with green details, but blue probably needs something different--purple, maybe, or orange. I don't know.

This would be so awesome if BLU had to take an EMP into the RED base to disable redmonds life-saving machine!

1024 units? Means red could never use a sentry to protect the cart, 1024 is the sentry's max sight line!

"Oh, I'm sorry: don't bother with sentries, they'll be useless. Have fun playing an engineer!"

While the 'real thing' isn't much for looks, I do plan on mine being able to convey its purpose clearly by the time I'm done.

Half of the problem is the lack of particles. When I was last working on this model back in... '09 I think, custom particles weren't exactly available. I do have 'spinny' parts planned as well as particles for the idle animation and 'explosion'. I'm going to try to get some new screens by the weekend that include some of the idle particles and changes to the model.

The biggest problem with it for me is, getting it to feel custom and unique, and not reminiscent of the original bombcart -- while still fitting in to the TF2 art style and gameplay.
