cant say i'm that impressed, i thought the server had a specific rotation for this particular evening...

if its going to be a tf2maps event , then surely everyone should use the thread on this forum for suggesting maps and abide by them, there were 13 maps already in the list, even restricting them to 30 mins each would be a 6.5 hour rotation.

Luckily i'm in a position of having my own server and community to test my maps on (although a fresh pair of eyes and non biased opinion is welcomed), others are not so lucky and a full server playtest will mean a hell of lot to them - playing maps that arent even nominated in the list on a gameday in preference to the original list is not cool in my eyes.

sorry you found it like this :/ the rotation on the server was fixed as printed through this thread. i made sure there were tf2maps.net admins set up to change maps. I'll check the console logs and see what went wrong with the rotation.

the rotation was as printed so im not sure why it went wrong - unless an admin changed maps.

I can easily password this server for your special nights - just say the word - it would guarentee only TF2Maps.net guys could play. What I can't do i guarentee i'll be there always to check it's going well.....but the admins are responsive - did you mention this to them at the time with @ message in chat - i'm sure they'd have responded positively. I had obviously got the wrong impression yesterday cos i'd noticed the server full from 7pm GMT on and thought it was a good sign that things were going well.

btw - the rotation printed above ran from Friday Night at 8pm and is still running - I'll leave it up all week - so you'll still have chance to get a game on it....seriously though, we're a friendly bunch, had you messaged admin asking for help with anything, it would have been addressed - it was a hard balance for me - 'Do I encourage all my lot to join you on the server and make sure you have a server full all night,' or Do I leave you guys to it? I wont know what happenned until i've read the logs. I will report back.

I asked multiple times for people to request tf2maps.net maps but no one said anything, nothing at all. People had loads of chances to request maps, and the rotation on that night, as colt said was the one that had been already decided

i dont think anything drastic needs to be altered, personally i was just looking forward to getting some good feedback from people who have been mapping longer than me, because mappers look totally differently at your map and can critique in ways the average player cant.

And i was stuck at work all night - able to see the server but unable to play :D - i can just about do everything from work except play tf2 :d

maybe my original post was a little cutting but you can put that down to 4 12hr nightshifts in a row :D

Some suggestions/comments:

1. Timelimit should not be 40+ minutes. Make it 30 AT MOST.
2. Stick to the schedule of maps. Requesting them seems pointless if we have a list set up.
3. Get a US server. I love the contribution of the server and the admin(s) are good and all, but 93% of us are US players. While I guess 100-300 ping isn't terrible, combined with the fact that we're basically "done" at 6pm est because all the Euros have to sleep isn't that great. Especially when the timelimit is set to like an hour. Getting other US players onto the server then isn't possible because nobody's going to join when they ping poorly.

i should like to put a hold on conclusions here. I have spent the last hour looking at the logs and they tell a very different fstory of a sucessful night.

I am preparing them and releasing them here - in the interest of openness.

Frankly i'm a little disappointed you felt the need to critise if you hadnt actually been on the server.

i think everything went well yesterday besides a few things. the rotation should of been stuck to the list that was created in the thread. but other than that, it was fun

Vilepickle has been on the server.

Overall I think it went pretty well, took some time before we got to tf2maps maps though. I wasn't requesting maps because the mapcycle was supposed to be decided.

As was stated before the reason for this was multi-fold. While requests were asked for the rotation WAS set as is stated in this thread. I have admin power and while I was on the server tried to keep us on track however I did notice that a few of the maps that were stated as uploaded I was not able to force a change to (at least they were not showing up in the admin panels "Change Map" menu, namely I noticed this with cp_spywinder_011, ctf_grothermal_b1, and ctf_rock)

I am unfamiliar with being an admin on a server and as such I dont know many of the commands, is there a command to just go to the next map in the rotation? like just "Go To Next Map". I know there is a way to set the next map, and there is a way to instantly change to a new, specified map (ex. change this_map.bsp) but i just want "gotonextmap"

Well I managed to confused GMT and EST, so I showed up at 9 EST instead of at 4. My bad. Does anyone know if my map spywinder got playtime? It was a laggy version so it might have been skipped.

I dont believe spywinder got played, I wanted to switch to it but I could not find it in the map list.

also alltalk on, always.

Alltalk would be nice but I think that if you want real constructive criticisms the best place for that is on the forum. What I can do is link to threads for people to respond to in the map list post that I make.

Alltalk can be turned on by request, and it was last night for a period of time.

Some suggestions/comments:

1. Timelimit should not be 40+ minutes. Make it 30 AT MOST.
2. Stick to the schedule of maps. Requesting them seems pointless if we have a list set up.

  1. the time limit is set at 40+ minutes because they want admins to change the maps, thats how the server is set up.
  2. I agree with this also, and I was trying to keep us on schedule when I was there but its kinda rude to interupt everyone that is playing and direct us back on schedule and I did not feel that was the best course of action.
  3. I also agree with this, I think for everyone east of Ohio its alright, my ping hovered between 80-100 ms which was not that bad. The problem is multi-fold here:
    1. We need to find someone based in the US who is willing to give us admin on their server and work with us to ensure the maps get uploaded.
    2. I would like it to be the same person each week.
    3. I feel its rude to ask for admin on someone elses server when I dont know them.
    4. Colt's Playground volunteered their server, uploaded the maps, and gave us admin.
*edit*

Spent so much time replying to peoples comments that I forgot to write my own comments.

I think that it went pretty well, we had lots of people from the forums, tons of people from outside the forums got to play the maps and I had a good time. While I can understand people not being happy about the ping but that is outside our control.

Compared to all previous game days this one I think was pretty successful, the planned server was up and running, we had most the maps uploaded, and I did try to keep us on rotation.

Just use the console to change the map. I don't know the command. But on the server where I have admin powers and no rcon it's ma_map cp_blaablaablaa. Not all maps show up in the maplist somehow.

here is the log with steam id's removed and only significant stuff left in, draw your own conclusions.

The rotation was set exactly as requested and al maps were on the server and the fast ftp download. i think the time limit point is important and can be addressed next time. a shorter time limit for the night can be acheived by me setting the enemy down 30 minute game config which i can do, this will ensure more maps are played and seems like a good idea.

My own conclusion from the logs - a great time had by all and some epic games. I'm pretty sure those that actually attended it will agree it was a sucess with some good lessons learnt for next time ;) There's one easy way to ensure the rotation plays all the maps - make sure if you are admin you have the planned rotation printed next to you and when you are ready to move on, select the next map in the list - that way the map change wont throw the rotation out but you can still cut games short and fit more in.

For a gameday on a new server, I think things went relatively well. Thanks again to Colt, Youme and the gang for facilitating the server. Admins were responsive in changing maps and altering cvars, there was a large audience prepared to play custom maps, and people were generally friendly. I'd like to hear from the author of cp_hallway (Tokit, yes?) in this thread to see how useful feedback was.

I can't say anything about the intended rotation, but for the next gameday, I will note down the rotation and author of each map. We can cover all maps in the list, giving favor to maps with authors present (as we did with cp_hallway). We need to enforce a hard time limit of 30 minutes, too.

also alltalk on, always.

I was in the boat with all talk too, Sniper, but when it was turned on things just fell apart. Most of the talk was not feedback related, and some people decided to start playing the most inane junk I've ever heard. I don't think we can have it on unless people grow up.

Also, Vile was on the server, multiple times, and his criticisms are valid.

I definitely agree with Vile's point about timelimits.

According to this, once game day officially started (an hour after it should have), play times went something like this:
  • cp_hallway: 49 minutes (author present)
  • dom_complex: 27 minutes (author present)
  • cp_redstone: 15 minutes (author not present)
  • cp_bloodstained: 105 minutes (60 first time and author present, 45 second time and author not present)
  • ctf_chaos: 16 minutes (author present)
  • ctf_snofort: 4 minutes (author not present)
  • cp_science2: 9 minutes (author present)
  • ctf_badlands: 53 minutes (author not present)
  • cp_ignition: 69 minutes (not on list)
  • cp_2kyscraper: 9 minutes (no idea on server population)
  • cp_spywinder: ???
It may not actually be practical to set the server time limit shorter, because there's no guarantee that beta maps will adhere to that limit. But there should be an admin who stays on the ball and tries, within reason, to give every map an equal share of time. The above list indicates some pretty strong disparities.

I am not sure, I was thinking about this coming weekend but that is easter weekend and I have family coming into town.

Not only that but this is a busy week for me so I will not really have time to do all that is nessesary to organize an event this week.

So unless someone else decides to get it all together then I will not be there.

There has been some talk about what maps where played, what maps should be played and all that. I thought I had addressed this at the end of the last game day but it seems some people did not read that post and I am going to need to copy+paste it into whatever the next game days thread is.

Shmitz - about it starting an hour late... The rotation was running all weekend so anyone was welcome to join the server ealier, or later, or right this minute if you want to.

Rotation 'problems' - so overall we played 7 maps being developed on this server (not sure about snowfort, if it is then thats 8) which seems pretty good for one evening imo. Admins were present for what I think to be the entire evening so any issues about maps being played for too long/too short/not being played at all needs to be said at the time by players. Having said that, players need to stop begging for the next map to be put on, and some of the members of this community need to wake up and realise that on a custom map server running a custom map game day rotation doing RTV to dustbowl isnt very inteligent.

This sunday i'll probably be traveling so I can only be around if the day is set for saturday.

I'd just like to stress - if you want to test a map at a non game day time get hold of an admin(myself, colt, drpepper, imortal-D....) to ensure the map is on the server, jump on the TF2maps.net steam chat room and tell everyone you are testing, then get on the server and have fun.
