Even if Crysis is bad (I haven't played it), that is no reason to say that the Cryengine 3 Sandbox is equally bad. It looks amazing from that tech demo. It makes Hammer look like you're trying to knit a life sized house. With your feet. It deserves the name sandbox for sure.

As I understand it, though, it looks like it's only going to be available to certain developers. I guess Source has the advantage in that Valve are very mod friendly, as opposed to what Crytek appear to be...

Im pretty sure sandbox for Crysis (1) was available for public, so i dont see why the new one shouldnt?

Im reading that as 100% sarcasm.

I understand the game engines are from different plants/decades but having realtime preview and decent terrain editing would make Hammer so much better.

Oh and a TF2 mod for Crysis would be interesting

Sad fact is Crytek is using a editor they should be for devolving games and content.

We are using one that is not even as good as GTKRadient.. the editor IDsoftware used to make Q3a .. 12 years ago.

That said, I'm not sure it's entirely fair to compare Valve and Crytek directly.

From what I can understand, Crytek is a game-engine company. Their main goal is to license out the engine, and the games based on it are secondary. The engine is promoted by high-system-requirement "showcase" games. Crysis' high system requirements are actually a deliberate and sensible design choice, given that by the time the next batch of games comes out on it, hardware has (as always) improved. Having a good SDK is very close to Crytek's core business model.

By comparison, it seems Valve is more of a game company making games and selling games. Engine licensing is secondary, so SDK tools for outsiders aren't nearly as core as it is for Crytek.

Far Cry uses CryEngine, and Far Cry 2 uses a modified (to be easier to run) version of CryEngine 2 called the Dunia engine.

I would LOVE to play around with Sandbox. Dunia was a lot of fun and incredibly easy to learn (I think it took me all of 5 minutes to learn everything I needed to,) it's just unfortunate that FarCry2 wasn't worth mapping for, let alone barely worth finishing imo.

Not interested in any of the Crysis games, as many have said they suck. But yeah, doesn't mean a good game can't come from it. Bioshock, which I absolutely love, came from the Unreal Editor, and all the Unreal games suck. I don't know the specifics of Sandbox, but if they could easily make games that scaled down to run on crummy computers like Hammer games do, it could take over THE WORLD.

Sure, the Cyengine3 looks nice, and it probably will be, but it doesn't change the fact that right now I don't have any desire to Map with it, right now.

I wouldn't mind a more flexible hammer that contained the ability to create particles in editor and have the graphics styling option of TF2, even if it was a dirty graphics generation. Plus, I wouldn't mind the logic trees, or maybe even prop scaling. That, would be useful.
