"Valve dedicates all their time to making hats for TF2"

People keep saying this, but I have a question:

When was the last time Valve made a non-promotional hat for TF2, as opposed to using community-made models?

I had honestly thought every non-promo item was by the community, until digging through the wiki recently.

The Demoman Crown andddd I believe Demoman's rasta hair or whatever are Valve products, I believe.

I'm down with letting valve do what they want as long as the employees go home happy at the end of the day, and we still have a great product to buy. It probably more of a case of, "hey, everyone here is working on something new and innovative, or dota 2 or ep3 (hopefully) so we just have a bunch of modelers who don't know what to do." As Robin walks the halls of valve he hears this, put all of them in a big sack, walks them down to the tf2 quad, gives them a hat and tells them to, "Do all that artist stuff you do and put it in my game!" If they object, they die. So give the guys a break.

To be honest hats seem like extremely good training for modellers and texturers at valve and lets face it hats are a good idea. They give something valve games have that not alot of other games do and that my friends is individuality.

Also, "Hats ruin class silhouettes" is bullshit. The silhouettes are based on the body shape- demo's large torso, engies bulky waist, medics long coat, scouts tiny hunched shape, elc, etc. Hats have no effect on that whatsoever.

100% disagree as a Sniper. - I can't hit anyone wearing a towering pillar. :L

I'd open TF2 and show you just how much it affects the silhouette (plus it affects the color scheme and thus draws more attention to the head when it was supposed to be focused on the weapon) but I don't want to open TF2 anymore

I don't think it affects it as much as you think. Honestly, hats (barring Unusuals) have not affected gameplay (to me) at all. And as for colors, When a majority of your person a certain color (red/blue) and you get distracted by a green hat, then you should focus more on the game :p

Overall, hats/paints have not bugged me one bit.

I'll accept that, but i still feel the silhouette is barely affected. If i showed you, or even somebody who has only ever played vs bots, the class silhouettes but with hats (even the biggest most obnoxious hats). Theyd still have no trouble.

"I'd show you, but I don't want to. But believe me, I know what I'm talking about."

That's what I got from your post.

Hats don't affect the bulk of the silhouette of the character. I'm sorry, but if you can't tell that a demoman is a demoman from far away, it's not because of the hat. There are some other problems.

You mean like the fast-paced gameplay or my teammates that carry fountains of particles?

I say when you don't notice the hat and thus somehow have an invisible spot in your vision then okay, you don't have to process more graphics for the same information but when I see some Scout jumping around with bright colored sparkles all over his head I'm distracted from his weapon. How could I not be? The point of unusual effects is to get attention and since pretty much everybody wears at least one by now, the visual clutter and noise get on my nerves extremely quickly

OK, I don't want to go off-track too much, but firstly, you (and LeSwordfish) didn't mention unusual hats in your first post, so what I thought you were talking about was merely hats--not the unusual particle effects. That is a different story.

Hats by themselves (which was my argument) have no effect on the bulk of the silhouette.

Fortunately, hats are not usually unusual.
