What's the least expensive way to make a triggered light? I realise that naming lights makes them more expensive. I want to make warning lights turn on when a train goes by, but the working prototypes I have seem to slow down fps.

I'm trying to make a light that doesn't cast shadows, but I don't know if that's possible. I've used env_sprites, but they don't seem big enough. I've also turned the shadows off of the trains.

    thanks for your time

You miiiight be able to env_lightglow. It is what valve uses for a cheap "blinding" exit from a tunnel, like in half life 2. I'm not sure if they can be used to flip on/off, but they would be what you want.
