i hope you're no talking 12920 triangles for that chain
just take a look at boojum's chainlink models in his artpass contest. it's a simple, plain colored chain :)
cause the image he posted was this in the end:
http://nickgogerty.typepad.com/.a/6a00d83454b17a69e201053723adef970b-800wi

you did some medieval type of torture instrument with spikes

edit: that tutorial is supercool for chains as the desired one - you should check it out:

i just made a 4-sided chain-thing:

Now that's pretty good. How extreme is the slack on that model? I'm just looking for a little slack, not too much.

Well I was gonna start over with a new model, but it looks like Acumen has taken over. Do you want to do it or should I because right now you're ahead of me.

nah, that was just trying to show the detail you could go for this model - pain and simple
i didn't save this model anyways :)
be sure to take a look at that tutorial - i didn't know that functions either, but it was supercool so see that chain created in a couple of minutes..
on the other hand, The Asylum should be giving you some kind of dxf (hammer export) so you know exactly where the chain should be. don't you think so ? that way you can model the chain exactly to his need and don't need to fiddle around with it afterwards. i would always do that, cause it's rather vague atm, imo.

Nah, the info he's given should be fine for this, and I was mainly asking so that we wouldn't be working simultaneously on the same thing. I'm sticking with the same design, but I've decided to remake it from the ground up to be a bit blockier and more optimised. I'm planning on halving the poly count (or at least two thirds) and then halving that again for the first LOD, then finally turning it into a tube with normal mapping for the third LOD. It'll cost you RAM, but that's $20 a gigabyte nowadays so it should be fine.

don't do a tube with normal mapping please. it's a chain... *sadpanda*
if all there should be it would be one LOD, nothing more...

Well here it is anyway, as requested

The chain(s) should be where you'd expect to see the "ropes" in BLU's boxing ring
