I want to give a new skin to an official Valve prop. I have the texture ready, but I don't want it to replace the original texture of the prop (I want it to be a new skin).
How can I achieve that? What files do I need to edit?

You will probably need to create a separate model.

Can't I just edit one of the model files somehow, to accept the new texture?

All you need to do is edit the prop's .vmt to accept a new skin. If the prop already has skins, you'll see how to do it when you check the .vmt.

the vmt doesn't have the skins, each skin has it's own vmt.

The available skins is compiled into the model.

If you wish to add a new skin, you must either replace an existing one or recompile the model with your skin added (not really a big deal since steampipe, but you will need to pack the entire model)

Ok, how do I recompile a model and what do I need to change and where?
