I remember watching this before I had my PS3 and LBP. Ah, those days of scouring the YouTubes. But that was how I found out about one of my favorite podcasts so I remember it fondly.

I thought the LBP staff was trying to delete all maps that were references to other copywrited ones. I heard something about this great super mario holocaust for anyone trying to make a LBP version. They just happen to miss this one or was Valve cool with it?

Valve tends to be cool with tributes (see Gang Garrison 2 being plugged in the TF2 blog and the list of Portal inspired music in the Official Portal Group).

It's not like Nintendo took legal action for the Mario stages though, they just did that themselves.

However, the difference here is that this is a TF2 homage, and there's no way to truly recreate TF2 in LBP. Technically, a Mario-themed stage would be ok, but their problem was with stages that were direct recreations of World 1-1. Given the amount of people who just directly recreated iconic Mario stages, they just purge(d) all Mario levels to save time rather than pick through and see which stages aren't problematic, and afterwards they made a blanket statement regarding "copyrighted material" to cover themselves without having to get into the specifics.
