Isn't there some sort of steam cache file you can delete that often gives an almost magical seeming fix? I forget it's name...

Clientregistry.blob ? It's full of temporary data and gets regenerated when you restart Steam. That evil evil little binary file... Naming it "registry" leads to apt comparisons with the hoary Windows Registry.
