why not? better that way.

hotlinking is stealing bandwidth from the other site and for the most part, WAY slower load times because of that.

the great thing about server side hosting * us uploading* is that its fast loading and we don't have to worry about the host going down =)

Well, generally when you are hotlinking you are hotlinking to an image hosting website. So your not exactly stealing other peoples bandwidth, and I think the loading times are actually lower because the information is coming from different sites, instead of all being forced to come from a central location.

And I doubt its a problem, but it also reduces bandwidth load on tf2maps.net

*edit*
That being said, I just checked out the options and you can enter a URL link into the box, then the website auto-grabs it from there and caches it on the server. I think this is the best option as this will cut down on annoying flashy / animated avatars. So I think I am find with the way the avatars are currently handled.

My problem with them is I have my avatars on photobucket, and when I want to alter my avatar it's really nice to be able to just put it on there and rename it, and then my avatar changes everyone I have it linked from (as soon as people's browser caches refresh).

I don't understand why its so difficult for people to right click SAVE to desktop a picture, then upload it to this site for there avatar. *shrug* Its only a half a step more.

Photobucket. I am hosting the pictures for my own use and vB won't let me.

Deskalada: yes, there is already an 'upload from url', but that's asinine and not very useful.
