If your card don't support DX9... well... it's a bad card. You can buy one that supports DX10 for less than 60 $

So? It's the principle of changing something as core as the game's system requirements so late after the game's release. My card does support DX9, it just supports it badly.

And I'm not the kind of person who enjoys spending on computer parts. When I buy a game for which I cover the requirements, I don't expect this to change, ever.

When I bought it, nobody warned me that at some point I would have to pay more money than the game's own value if I want to keep being able to play it.

I would feel cheated out of my money.

I'll bet when you first bought a TV you werent told about the change towards digital and the eventual analogue turn off... even though your first analogue tv might still be working at the point of turn off you've still got to upgrade.
you must be running tf2 on lowest possible settings, do yourself a favour and upgrade!

DX9, I run it with everything at low and it doesn't get above 20 FPS.

DX8 with almost everything at high, I get a constant 50-60 FPS.

Playing on a X1300.

And your comparison is just silly. The timespan between the first analogue TV's and the shutdown of analogue televison is what... decades? And TF2 got released a year ago. What, will I have to keep buying new hardware every year if I want to keep playing the same game? Because I certainly don't have to buy a new TV every year.

I can't really see the point of you making this thread, you know everyone is just going to tell you should upgrade and you're just going to tell them they're wrong and nothing is going to change.

Valve are updating their game. thats what we love about valve, they update their games and keep them fresh. so now you're complaining about that??? so you'd rather we only had the stock maps and all those exploits?

There will be no posetive yield from this thread, they wont change their minds and you wont upgrade, there will only be frustration.

Could you please quote me on not wanting new maps and bug fixes?

Why is a change of engine necessary anyway? For more eye candy? The game looks good enough as it is.

Actually, you're right. I'd much rather Valve took time to develop new content for this game, instead of doing visual enhancements at the cost of a part of the game's crowd no longer being able to play it.

I'm a university student and I'm trying to save as much money as I can for my Master's degree. Buying hardware is the last thing on my mind right now. If Valve really do this, I'll just find another game to chill with in the boring evenings and never look at a Valve game again, but that would be kind of sad, since I really liked and supported them since the beginning.

I didn't ask for anyone to agree with me. I was just expressing my opinion on the matter. Or is there a rule against that here? :)

A game in all low settings isn't the same that one with all max settings. It's something completely different.

Just take a look here:

Low:

Very High:

If I were you I would buy a new card, the Nvidia GT 8600 runs TF2 on high without any problem, and costs 60 $

Didn't I just mention that DX8 allows me to play with almost everything at high? The only thing that I'm missing is the phong shading and I don't care that much about it.

Yeah, the 8600 is definitely where it's at for the budget-conscious gamer. I ran all of the Valve games on that card for a long time and was very pleased with it.

I would count myself lucky that DX8 was supported by TF2 to begin with if I were you.

DX8 compared to DX9 is like comparing the low quality and high quality of that pic...
running DX8 at high is going to look essentially the same as DX9 on low with some differences...

I suggest trying it before making such statements, because what you just said is absolutely ridiculous :) The only difference in TF2 between 8 and 9 is the Phong shading and some shadow differences.

Texture quality, model quality, they stay the same.

I can post some screenshots later if you want proof.

DX8 in high looks just like DX9 in high minus the Phong.

Guys, the reason why a lot of people want this update is because L4D is truly multithreaded so therefore everybody who has a DX9 card and a dual-core CPU will be able to run this game a hell of a lot smoother then it does at this very moment.

That's fine. In fact, I myself would greatly benefit from dual core support. I just hope they would find a way to implement it without making alterations to the rendering engine that noboby asked for.

I received a reply from Gabe Newell, and he confirmed the move to the L4D engine, but mentioned nothing about DX support. I sent an additional e-mail asking about that, I'll post the reply when I receive it.

Until then I'm keeping my fingers crossed for backwards compatibility.

please do, i personally find it difficult to believe they would even bother to release a new DX version without there being some kind of significant change...and even more so...i find it difficult to believe that phong shading alone is causing you to drop 40fps, there is something else you are missing out on

EDIT:
this is what ive came across:
DX9
dx9_water.jpg

DX8
dx8_water.jpg

you seem to lose water quality in DX8, and that does explain the frame loss when you switch to DX9, as water is a pain

you've got a dual core and your graphics card is on DX8?

Is it a fact that L4D won't support dx8?

And btw does it support dx10? (that will probably mean no more maxed settings for me, I upgraded to a new 22'' monitor today -> more pixels :p)

I already mentioned that it's DX9 but just doesn't run it smoothly. It's a X1300. Could you please point me to the relation between the two anyway, I'm very interested to hear it.

MrAlBobo, screenshots are coming, I'm having some trouble connecting to Steam right now :)
