It's weird that people make that comparison. The Garand wasn't even a reference when I made the model.

I'm guessing i wasn't the 1st one... but the gas trap, upper hand-guard, front band, and the flash hider resemble my M1D and the magazine and its release resemble it's brother the m14's. I dunno, all i know is it looks good and it represents what you were going for well :p.

Tapp, work on those smoothing groups. That's the first step in helping you surface the model.

NOOO! This is a horrible tutorial, and is not to be used! Not only did the guy making it not know what he was doing, he's also got some inverted normals on his example model.

The proper way to do smoothing in blender is to use the edge split modifier. Set it on your model, turn off "from edge angle" and then select the edges you want sharp and hit ctrl+e and select mark sharp. You'll notice that the edge is now sharp.

Before you export you'll want to apply the modifier. This will chop your model up based on what you've marked sharp. Export and you're good. You can save before you apply the modifier, or if you've already applied it, but want to make changes to your model, you can select your entire model in edit mode, and hit "W" and select "Remove doubles". Then just re set the edge split modifier and you can edit your model again.

I'm guessing i wasn't the 1st one... but the gas trap, upper hand-guard, front band, and the flash hider resemble my M1D and the magazine and its release resemble it's brother the m14's. I dunno, all i know is it looks good and it represents what you were going for well :p.

Thanks! I've really got to pick myself up a Garand one of these days.

My newest (and oldest...and first) map, Sublevel.
Warning: X-TREME work in progress. Haven't even finished the "make one side so it can be easily mirrored" process (planning for this to be an arena map, by the by.)

This is very much a learning process for me so I'm chugging along ever so steadily.

To do: Finish basic shape and lighting > Look over > Minor playtest > if successful, detail > detail > detail > playtest > detail > playtest > ????? > profit. (maybe.)

Pretty sharp. I'm loving your plethora of details. The minor fog effect (It exists, right? Not just seeing things?) really adds to it.

I totally imagine some light wind-type environmental SFX going on in the exterior scenes.

DBP: that rain looks too angled, imo :/

Void: Have you considered making the front face of the upper row of monitors the same beige as the larger face? It might look better that way...

DBP, you have something really nice going on there.

I personally like the angle of the rain. Combined with the right soundscape it will be perfect!

Thanks! I've really got to pick myself up a Garand one of these days.

It's my favorite gun out of my collection, the only bad things are that it's really heavy anywhere from 8-14lbs, the firing pin is free-floating so you need stronger primers like cci #200 or mil spec, and the last bad thing is modern powder burns too slow and the US-Army is running out of the Ball2 ammo that was made for it so you may need to buy ammo online from American Eagle or make your own.

Oh and if you really want one you can got to CMP sales, its a website run by the government to get rid of old used firearms, you can pick up a slightly worn Garand for $600 bucks plus the $50 membership fee. If it came with an old beaten stock like mine did you can get one from BOYDS gun-stocks.

Also I want those computer screens :p

At this rate, DBP would have started more maps then all TF2M's members put together. :p
