72hr Jam 2023 Saprina (Spy Playermodel Mod) 1
The hard counter to Mimi Sentry
Hi! I'm DudeTheNinja, and earlier in the year, amidst all the "Sentry Robot Girl" craze, I drew a Sapper robot girl, taking design elements from the Sapper and the Spy Robots for reference.
I took this 72hr Jam as an opportunity to make her 3D (and also give her a proper name, as the original name, "Sapgirl", was kinda bland). This was a fun task to try and model, texture, and rig a whole character model in a weekend. Day 1 was focused on modelling and rigging, Day 2 was texturing, and Day 3 was final tweaks (including face flexes, VM support, and some proportion tweaks). The mod replaces Spy, and does not support Valve servers (as this jam was mostly focussing on getting her to work properly as a model, rather than to get her to work in Casual).
Alright, here's a rundown of what the mod includes:
The Model Herself
The model replaces the Spy, and is rigged up properly to the Spy's skeleton (although initially was going to be just a posing-only model, I decided to just whip her up for a playermodel mod - the posing model has a broken skeleton, anyway!).
Textures are as follows:
1024x1024 head
1024x1024 body (+1024x1024 phongmap stored as a separate normalmap texture)
All textures were done as follows: Blockout in Blender, painted in Krita, converted to VTF with Paint.NET. The edgewear on the metal was done with a simple marker pen brush, in case you were wondering.
Supports Ubercharge.
I gave the mod viewmodel support. Rigging's a little bit icky on the Disguise Kit but it is hidden by the menu and I'm strapped for time so whatever.
Also face flexes! This was the first time I have ever tried making face flexes for a model outright (let alone a Source one), so it was a fun learning experience. The model lipsyncs surprisingly well, which I do like. Shown here is the "specialAttack01" expression, which gives Saprina a scowl when she attacks with a weapon.

Extra cool tidbits
The model has jigglebones for the cable-ribbon, and the ponytail. Also face flexes!
