One of the chief reasons that Valve included crits is that they can sway the fight in favor of one contestant so much that a new player can defeat a skilled opponent, which in turn makes the new player enjoy the game and continue to play it.

- A random factor that can sway the competition in great favor to the less skilled contestant reduces the representation of skill in the competition, which in turn defeats the point of a competition.

- Crits can greatly sway the competition due to the fact that they can kill multiple people in one shot as opposed to three or more shots.
- Crits lessen the representation of skill and reduce the effectiveness of the competition, therefore breaking the competition.
