things don't seem to be doing what they're supposed to

where he talks about using the clipping tool. im holding control and left click but nothing is getting selected. im very confused.

He says to first select the brushes and then use the clipping tool - you cannot select brushes from within the clipping tool. Use the selection tool first, which is the topmost option on your toolkit, and then switch to the clipping tool.
