Portal 1 references Black Mesa in a slideshow, and I believe Eli mentions Aperture in Episode 2. The Borealis also makes an appearance in both EP2 and Portal 2 (to be more accurate, it makes a disappearance). They're definitely linked, though how exactly the timelines match up I'm not sure.

Oh no, to clarify - i know the two exist in the same universe, it's the timeline which I wasn't sure about.

Also, Soldier never actually fought in World War 2.

I did put that Soldier was Unregistered. He went on a Nazi Killing spree until he thought that the war was over...WW2 ended in 1945, He stopped in 1950...

Did you read the timeline? My theory is that BLU was lead by Aperture Science, and he renamed himself Cave Johnson (or simply was named) that, and he made up / exaggerated a story that he was a shower curtain salesman. The facilities that you find in portal 2 are - in fact, real, but much of Cave's backstory is simply so that nobody would know BLU soldier's real past. Black Mesa was founded in the 50's, but in terms of land claiming, which was what RED and BLU was fighting for. The entire time, they were fighting for plots of gravel that eventually became the location for Black Mesa. BLU was to originally build their base there as well, but they had to relocate as they were pushed out as of rivalry. The Rivalry between Aperture and Mesa was originally the Fight between RED and BLU.

How can you get a aperture science item (appsap) before aperture science made science?
