I don't understand all this crap about Mario games.
Super Mario Galaxy was one of the worst games I've played in the series. Time has not been kind to the fat flumber.
However the New Super Mario bros is decent.
Galaxy is still less shit than "Unleashed".
Problem with Mario games isn't that they're... ok... They're not great, and quite honestly the newest Super Mario Bros is a cynical attempt at milking the franchise if I've ever seen one. They're ok, the problem is that we've been playing the same damn game since Mario 64 (or Super Mario Bros, depending on which game you're playing)... Mario hasn't changed a lick since 96, and even then it was just catching up after 10 years of massive technological advancement and mario, once again, not changing a lick since NINETEEN-EIGHTY-FUCKING-FIVE.
It's the same. It's always the same. It has been the same since 1985. The unlikable and dimwitted fuck that is Princess Peach is once again abducted by the mentally challenged giant turtle Bowser, which wants her for god knows what reason... He doesn't want to kill her because he's had more chances than I care to count. He clearly doesn't wanna jump her because, again, he's not lacking opportunity.
But anyways, he abducts the pink idiot and hides off in whatever contrived fortification du jour, after which Mario for some unknown idiotic reason proceeds to cross a few levels which are visually different but inevitably play the same to go save the thankless braindead bimbo. And there's always a set of gimmicky water, fire and "air" levels, and Mario has to collect an arbitrary number of magic stars because apparently he never learned how to kick down a stupid door.
And through all of them all of the characters generate the empathy of a fucking brick because they're all so unbelievably stupid.
The whole thing made sense in 1985, where that garbled incoherent mess was quite likely the BEST writing the videogame world had seen, but seriously...
The games got unimaginative 10 years ago, the gameplay has been stale with a side of gimmicky for at least 3 games now, and the story has never made sense, a fact which is only emphasized nowadays when compared to stories that, even if terribly unimaginative and stock, are at the very least coherent.
I guess what I'm trying to say is BLAAAAAAAAAAARGH, I want the Nintendo that made decent and slightly original games back again please... And while we're day dreaming I want the GOOD Lucasarts back again too... and a unicorn... with lasers.
