Sega is forgetting that game design isn't in itself a video game. The series hit rock bottom years ago. There are no save points. They can't undo 15 years. Sega is ignoring the fact that they are the problem and that they need to drop the series.

I don't understand all this crap about Mario games.

Super Mario Galaxy was one of the worst games I've played in the series. Time has not been kind to the fat flumber.

However the New Super Mario bros is decent.

Galaxy is still less shit than "Unleashed".

Problem with Mario games isn't that they're... ok... They're not great, and quite honestly the newest Super Mario Bros is a cynical attempt at milking the franchise if I've ever seen one. They're ok, the problem is that we've been playing the same damn game since Mario 64 (or Super Mario Bros, depending on which game you're playing)... Mario hasn't changed a lick since 96, and even then it was just catching up after 10 years of massive technological advancement and mario, once again, not changing a lick since NINETEEN-EIGHTY-FUCKING-FIVE.

It's the same. It's always the same. It has been the same since 1985. The unlikable and dimwitted fuck that is Princess Peach is once again abducted by the mentally challenged giant turtle Bowser, which wants her for god knows what reason... He doesn't want to kill her because he's had more chances than I care to count. He clearly doesn't wanna jump her because, again, he's not lacking opportunity.

But anyways, he abducts the pink idiot and hides off in whatever contrived fortification du jour, after which Mario for some unknown idiotic reason proceeds to cross a few levels which are visually different but inevitably play the same to go save the thankless braindead bimbo. And there's always a set of gimmicky water, fire and "air" levels, and Mario has to collect an arbitrary number of magic stars because apparently he never learned how to kick down a stupid door.

And through all of them all of the characters generate the empathy of a fucking brick because they're all so unbelievably stupid.

The whole thing made sense in 1985, where that garbled incoherent mess was quite likely the BEST writing the videogame world had seen, but seriously...

The games got unimaginative 10 years ago, the gameplay has been stale with a side of gimmicky for at least 3 games now, and the story has never made sense, a fact which is only emphasized nowadays when compared to stories that, even if terribly unimaginative and stock, are at the very least coherent.

I guess what I'm trying to say is BLAAAAAAAAAAARGH, I want the Nintendo that made decent and slightly original games back again please... And while we're day dreaming I want the GOOD Lucasarts back again too... and a unicorn... with lasers.

Why is it that l4d2 got boycotted, yet these 25 year old re-releases are not?

I effing loved SMG. Maybe because it was my "relax" game where I didn't feel I needed to be hardcore with it or anything, and it was really good at just being a fun game that you mess around with. By the way, there's plenty of new things in SMG, and if you're looking for a reason to play the game, the story is the wrong place to look (nobody cares about it tbh, so that point is pretty moot.)

And by the way, the thing NEVER made sense. It was absurd even in 1985, which is one reason it was so fun. Mario is NOT a serious game, never was, never will be.

I do agree that SMG is less shit than Unleashed - a f*cking werewolf? Really?

EDIT:
Because it's clearly new content. L4D2 was boycotted because it looked like the original and was released within a year.

Maybe SMG2 will be boycotted then? It's basically applying the L4D2 strategy of taking a successful game and just making more content for it under a new label ... I still want it though.

Man, and I thought the members of this site weren't shallow. I guess not.
I bolded everything you said that isn't talking about the gameplay. Notice how the people that like mario games ONLY like mario because of the gameplay? Try not to take games so seriously, and maybe you'll have a fun time.

A game doesn't come down to gameplay alone. Especially NOT a single player game. And I did comment on gameplay, it's been stale and repetitive for years now.

And don't give me the "it's family friendly!" bullshit. Psychonauts is very family friendly and has a brilliant story. An imaginative but coherent story with different layers of depth for both kids and adults to enjoy. Mario doesn't have a story. It has some crap tacked on to justify cutscenes.

Hell, Psychonauts is what a good Mario game would be if it had gone anywhere but up it's own ass for the past 25 years.

Sorry to get off-topic, but this is my last post in this thread.

For me it does. Everything else is just icing on the cake. If it has awesome visuals, then cool, it makes it a little bit better. Bad or strange visuals does not take away from the game for me. That's why Bayonetta looks awesome to me: the gameplay.
