That makes a lot of sense, since arches are already hollow, so it's a lot neater and easier to work with. I will definitely use this as a lesson and implement that next time! !
Why wait until next time? It shouldn't be too hard to replace what you have now.
The other thing to consider is, the compiler doesn't always chop up faces and remove the bits that touch other faces when it's dealing with func_details. This can have an effect on lighting as well. Here's a demonstration of what I mean:

despite the terror I felt at deleteting my old pipes, I am glad I did. These new ones look a lot neater. It didnt take as long as I thought to set them up. Thank god for copy and paste lol!
