How to automatically "divide" displacements?

So apparently, valve maps choose to just use a lot of power 2 displacements instead of power 3 or 4.
But for me, clipping one big displacement into a lot of small displacements took a very long time.
So, is there a method to just, automatically do this? Transforming one big displacement into a lot of small displacements?
