How do you get inspired for a new map?

How do you get inspired for a new map?

I just get bored sometimes and then I think of some random thought and I go hey that's not a bad map idea, then I think about the layout and draw a very rough sketch. Then I open hammer and start it and add things as ideas come into my head and eliminate as I go.

I look at other maps and say to myself, what's good/bad about this map? How can I emulate the goodness without copying? So I write notes for myself about things I should include, no. of flanks, height advantages etc., and then I start building around that.

Like for ctf_ellis (that no one ever saw in the end, heh) I thought about what makes ctf fun, which led me to put lots of routes TOWARDS the flag and less away from it, with routes that the defenders could use to chase after their stolen flag.
