I'm a newbie map maker and have been learning about map making for - I'd like to say - since last year.
I started map making with Portal 2 when I found out that I can submit my own custom maps. I never did submit my custom map, but from then on I thought of mapping for TF2. My first TF2 map is a Capture the Flag game called "ctf_trenchbay", where the gimmick is that there are short trenches on both sides of the map with a big chunk of the cliffside missing in the middle. Admittedly, I bit off more than I could chew, and looking back at it now I could definitely work on it properly with better techniques.
Currently, I've just finished a very casual medieval King of the Hill game called "koth_tavernfray". It's a small indoor map with a cozy atmosphere to it, and a few secret references scattered about. I even got to make a custom loading screen for it, thanks in part for the forum threads I saw here!
I hope I can continue to make more maps in the future, since trenchbay and tavernfray are just 2 out of the 14 map ideas I have in my memo pad
