I noticed some chatter on Jeb's twitter about the memory crashes and 64 bit java. Apparently Sun's automatic thing only gives 32 bit out, regardless of your system, and you have to get 64 bit manually.
Since I installed 64 bit java I have not had any memory crashes even on far rendering. If you aren't sure if you have it, check if Java is installed in both program files directories, or just the x86 one.
