If I want to make sure none of my areaportals have leaks and whatnot, do I need to VIS compile or will BSP be able to tell me?

    compile log will say.

    Go to your View>pointfile.

This loads up the tiny zigzag red line so you can trace it to your leak suspect.

I've had that "wtf now it's just a brush" experience before with single portals.

I try to avoid the :ig: button with brush entities because it selects the brush itself only and not the entity, leading to weird results especially if you copy-paste.
