arena_mirage (huge pics inside, be prepared)

    Hello guys,

    today I want to show you my present project, arena_mirage. Although the name itself was only supposed to be the working title, I soon got used to it and so never changed it.

    Current Status: Release Candidate 5
    (Why not beta? - I don't like the word :p)

    To the map itself:
    It's a small arena mode map, feature the necessary center cp in a building in the middle. That building has two entrances for both teams, allowing the players to have either a speed advantage or a height advanctage in the race to the middle. The cp will be activated after 60 sec.
    There are 4 small health kits around as well some more ammo to provide enough metal or ammo for engineers, snipers and so on. A Dispenser near the team's spawn rooms can slowly heal and resupply at the cost of time loss and vulnerability as the dispensers are reachable also for the enemy team. No burning stopping water is available. Did I miss something important? Guess not.

    the map also features:
    - custom posters (downloaded appreciatively from here and the one made by me)
    - custom models (one simple made by me and the warped crate by Mic)
    - HDR (of course!)
    - cubemaps :)O)
    - some detail rooms valve style :>

    When will this piece of art be accessable?
    As soon as I what you too :D - No, I will add a downloading shortly after I fixed the lighting issues and recompiled it with -final.

    So, feel free to comment it, it's still under development - the faster I finish it, the faster I will have to face my nemesis pl_canyonsiege... :D

    I have a slight feeling that if it plays well, it might get accepted into Valve's next update. But maybe that's just me...

    Only god knows what they're actually hiding in there ;)

    I admit there are quite open spaces, but they seem to be bigger than they are. I will think about a little sightblocker, but the space now is pretty close to what i've planned so far. But to be really sure I need a maptest with more than 5 persons ^^


    Thanks for your positive resonance, it makes me feel quite proud on my first ever to be released map :)

    I particularly like the varied and visually appealing borders between the playing field and skybox. I'm looking forward to examining the scale of it!

    4 healthkits - better watch out with that. It looks very awesome, though.

    I put "more" health into the map to even the lack of water in the map (there is actually a small pound on each side) so that people won't burn to long. But I played lumberyard just a couple of minutes ago, remembering me that this waterless map also just has one healthkit. Now I'm looking for a good spot outside the main combat zone for the only healthkit.

    Looks awesome. I love the look of the building the control point is in.

    On that note, the wavy glass on the roof of the point is really cool. How do you achieve that look?

    This is one of the parts I'm not so proud of. I failed terrible to recreate the Portal glass, so I used that particular shader on normal glass. If that texture is streched on the whole brush, the waves are also streched, which creates this very nice effect.

    If some could do a non-valve wave glass, I would just that instead of "stealing" half the texture.
