Ok I completed my first map and Im sure I will refine it and alter it alot. I clicked run and at first it ran some files and said....file not found....so then I saved it into my TFC map files where all the rest of my TF2 files are. Well this time when I clciked run ....it all seemed to be going well....it got to the loading phase and then a console popped up...it finally said firsttry not found. I named my map "firsttry". What I'm wondering is if I have to publish this map to steam first or something before I can play it. Does anyone know?

Thanks,

Paul

did you check for leaks? Also do you have your info_player_teamspawn's spawning in the floors or walls or anything. This has caused me problems at times

A couple of thoughts:

1. Do you run TF2 through Hammer? If so, don't. Uncheck that 5th box in the compile dialog and run TF2 as you normally would.

2. You mention TFC in your post. Did you mean TF2?

Edit: You might want to edit out your Steam Account name.

Yes, I run it through hammer for this new map. But to play ordinary maps I dont. Yes sorry I meant TF2.

do i have to publish this map first to steam somehow? just curous as to why my steam account name would be a problem. I have my steam account name peclarkjr and my nickname [KKG]@Rooster. I changed the map name to SoldierArena...just in case.

I dont see any leaks anywhere.

When I Run this is what it says:

I dont seewhy its doing this. It might be that its saving to the wrong place/folder etc. and not able to find it.

when i go to save as it saves it as an .rmf file or I have only one other choice a .map file. is this correct?

I followed the valve tutorial to a "T". Good directions but it must be something simple.

Any Ideas???? Can anyone help? thanks!

Yes, until I click run in Hammer and it compiles it. Right? I started this map from scratch. Im under the impression you can bring the map back into make changes and run/complile it again.

I mean that is how it is compiled according to the directions for hammer. Tell me if Im wrong...Thanks! :) Click File, and run...it compiles and if you check the bos it will play the map.

Have you noticed that many of the paths in your compile log have .../ tf/... as opposed to .../tf/...? The difference is the single space prefixing tf.

Hammer reads TF2 maps in .vmf format. When you compile, the .vmf file is processed and output as a .bsp file.

It also looks like you keep your work inside the steam directory structure. This is fine, but I like to keep my work in something like "C:\work\hl2_maps\". You might try moving your vmf outside of the steam directory structure and trying to compile there.

Thanks! think we are heading in the right direction here...but dont I have to reconfigure Hammer to do that? Like slect Tools then options change the game executables so it knows where to find it?

Like you said. hammer reads a VMF file. When I go to save as it saves as an RMF. I dont know why its doing that. I'm not able to save it as a VMF therefor when the map runs/compiles it cant find the file....correct? what is and RMF ... i did a search and it comes up some kind of Adobe acrobat file.

I uninstalled SDk and resinstalled...still doing the same thing.

Does anyone know how to make it save as a VMF file?

Thanks,

Paul

When you are in the Save File Dialog box, is vmf in the drop down list?

rmf is the old Worldcraft format. Worldcraft is the predecessor to Hammer.

:confused1:
.vmf is not in my drop down list at all. Only .RMF and .Map are in it.

How do i get vmf in my drop down list? That should solve my problems.

I just downloaded Source SDK from steam so Hammer should be updated. I never had Hammer until 2 weeks ago and I ahve a brand new PC. I uninstalled and downloaded it again and still the same ONLY .RMF and .Map.

Here is what I tried. I tried opening a vmf file into hammer to see if it would add it to my drop down list when I go to save as and it still only dispalys rmf and .map.

I apprecaite any help anyone can offer. I've been stuck at this point for a week now. I've made several maps but none will compile because I dont have .vmf in my save as selection only .rmf and .map.

Thanks!

This is a map I created from scratch. When you save your map is it saved as an RMF file? Once you complie it it should be automatically save as a .bsp file correct?

only reason I asked is because you said the mapname was "firsttry" but in the log it keeps bringing this up "SoldierArena.bsp", which I would assume that you are compiling a map named SoldierArena lol.

ya that was another one....sory to confuse you...

Im still stuck on this....
For Tf2 maps is everyone using the version downloaded from Source SDk off steam?
I also found another version on the net but its version 3.4. Maybe I have the wrong version???

now I have two Hammers. I think vers 3.4 is the oldest version.

Anyway...Im still at square one...its easy to use all the tools to make these maps....and its fun...but for some reason Im stuck with saving them as RMF rather than vmf....

Thanks everyone. I finally got it right. I had to uninstall and download Hammer like 4 times but finally it works. Also had to reconfigure hammer.....still havin a slight problem thos...it saves my vmf in my HL/EP2/maps folder rather than my TEAm Fortress 2/tf2/maps folder when I compile...no biggie I jsut copy and move the folder. Anyway...it works. Sorry to have posted this question or thread turned out to be in to places.

Thanks again!
