Yeah so about me (in relation to tf2):

I have done a bit of mapping and am quickly improving. One of my 4 current projects is almost ready for some testing and this seemed like a good place. However, can someone please tell me what counts as alpha and what is classified as beta?

Well uhm, what i've understand here is; alpha is for all the gameplay things. So if all the gameplay of your map is done, you go to beta. Something like that :p

so ehm, welcome!

Ps. can you tell about your other projects. Im kinda curious

So betas just for texturing? Because the maps playable but not perfect balance and no textures.

Also, the almost done map is arena type, and the other 3 are a special arena for scout combat, a quadruple domination (like double domination on unreal tournament) and a dustbowl style Cp map. Coming soon: a 5cp map and soldier arena AND a mystical transforming arena map of doom!

Oh yes and thanks for the response.

Imho, alpha is when you still have to change big parts of the map, and it modifies gameplay. Only simple textures and design.
When you are satisfied with gameplay and balance is quite good, you go to beta and start detailing the map, doing little change to balance it, etc.

That's how I see it. I might be wrong since I didn't ever make a map =°

I'd say it's beta by that measure because most changes now are tweaks, but i might pick late alpha because i don't want to skip it completely or i'll look silly :D

Alpha and Beta are really just an idea truth be told :p

They both explain the map are in progress, yet playable. Alpha's tend to not be detailed so they can focus on the way the major layout affects gameplay. Beta's tend to add in tiny details that balance out gameplay while smoothing over the alpha's look with textures and details.

You know, when the name is like pl_hoodoo_b4 is the 4th beta of hoodoo, or ctf_icefield_a6 is the 6th alpha of icefield, etc.
